🛢️The Fly That Thrives In Petroleum! 🛢️

avatar

Back with another odd animal trivia I learnt today!

So there's a species of fly called Diasemocera petrolei.

And as it's scientific name suggests, it has the unique ability to thrive in an environment that is super toxic for any other insect. Petroleum. Yes you read that right! Thedr little fellas have adapted to living life in pools of petroleum.

Not surprisingly, the species is commonly known as the petroleum fly and originates from California.

They are really small, about 5 mm long and their resistance to petroleum is so remarkable they can even submerge into it!

We know for a fact that most of their development from newly hatched larva and pupa takes place exclusively in petroleum. As for the eggs, we still don't know for sure if they are laid in oil or not.

In case you wonder, they don't feed directly on petroleum but on dead matter, like insects and other poor arthropods that become trapped in the sticky liquid. Having said that, their guts are routinely found filled with petroleum in amounts that would be deadly for all other insects.... and most other lifeforms. 😅

Here's a video I found with more info and some great footage if you'd like to learn more on the species:

What a fascinating creature!

P.S As always, I will leave a tag for @enginewitty cause he loves shit like this 😎

It would be curious to understand what is behind their metabolism of petroleum that could help develop compounds that could de-pollute environments with oil contamination

Bugs saving the environment would be call but I doubt it will happen 😅

That is a pretty crazy fly. I guess all those dead animals in oil doesn't go to waste.

I probably saw many such optimistic flies at one tiny Black Sea resort where there were only two public canteens, the cuisine of which was so terrible and toxic that none of my family members could touch the food, which was difficult to even call food, not a culinary creation. We had to have a barbecue every day so as not to be hungry lol. But, in those canteens there were a huge number of flies that were not going to die after landing on toxic cutlets and toxic soup.

But, I must note that around us, at other tables, there were no less tenacious visitors to tourist bases, who, like flies, could eat this with pleasure and did not die immediately ... I don’t know what happened to them later, I was not engaged in statistics then and did not ring them like rare birds. :) !BEER !DIY

There are moments in life that become funny only after a while, but at that moment, I can’t remember laughing at it, it was a slight state of shock and an attempt to survive at the resort :) !VSC !DIY

Jeez, that thing kinda makes my skin crawl. Useful though, I suppose. Especially if they could evolve to devour human trash 😁
