The Dig, a beautiful watch you shouldn't miss
Back with another great movie I enjoyed yesterday on Netflix.
A movie about a looming world war. A movie about an archaeological discovery of great historical significance. A movie about human relationships. A movie about the meaning of life, death and the related philosophical bs. So many themes, all beautifully woven together.
Meet The Dig, a historical drama about the discovery of the Sutton Hoo treasures:
An archaeologist embarks on the historically important excavation of Sutton Hoo in 1938. source
Sutton Hoo is the site of two early medieval cemeteries dating from the 6th to 7th centuries near the English town of Woodbridge. Archaeologists have been excavating the area since 1938, when a previously undisturbed ship burial containing a wealth of Anglo-Saxon artefacts was discovered. The site is important in establishing the history of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of East Anglia as well as illuminating the Anglo-Saxons during a period which lacks historical documentation. source
Of course many creative liberties are taken, don't expect 100 % accuracy.
Generally I prefer fast paced movies, in this case though the story is told in a really slow yet captivating way. I truly enjoyed every second of it. The fact I am a fan of archaeology certainly played a part. This, and the amazing job the actors did in their roles. Especially Ralph Fiennes who nailed the role of the amateur yet talented archaeologist who finally gets a chance to rise above his snob professional peers and even gain their respect.
The movie has an average rating of 7.0 on IMDb but fuck that. An easy 9 from me. Give it a watch, maybe you won't love it as much as I did but you will surely enjoy it.

I remember watching this some time back. Such a simple story but kept me captivated to watch it all in one sitting. Great story!
This is the best part of the trailer everything else is drama and bs. 😁
7 tomatoes..
I like his roles in the films "Onegin", "Reader". Now I looked at the filmography, I will have to find time for several films.
Looks like a good movie to watch on the world war, with a new angle on it. Will be adding also this one to my watch list, this evening I am just preparing to see "All quiet on the western front", another review/recommendation from you. 😉
Oh!!!! I'm going to watch this one, forgot all about it as had other things to watch. Loved the book and don't think the Series will live up to it, but hey sometimes they just add a different dimensions. I mean I adored the tv series of Catch 22.. captured the madness and chaos of the original book even though it diverged from it.
:) I like his demeanor.. strong, determined, get things done. looks like a good one. thanks.
Would you stop already my list of shit to watch is longer then Santa wish list……. But I’ll add it.🤪
The face at on the trailer before you play it looks genuinely disgusted by the passionate yet lazy description 😂😂😂
I love archaeological films too, I feel it's one of the best way to remember facts or half facts about the world, cause most things you watch in screen that are interesting actually stick...
Would definitely watch this🔥
much drama, many history :)
One of the most outstanding archaeological finds in the U.K. A researcher recently realised that the man, warrior, now thought to be Saxon King, buried here was left handed. The wear marks on sword fittings indicated on which side he'd worn the sword and had oft put his at at rest. His left handedness may have given him an advantage in battle and hence helped make him a great warrior and rise to his position in life.

I loved it... I mean Sutton Hoo is a great story anyway, but chuck in war and Ralph fiennes and I'm totally sold.
