I had to look this one up. Apparently Seneca believed suicide was warranted "if you were impoverished, crippled, terminally ill or insane". He also believed that it was justified in order to “burst the bonds of human servitude”. The last condition would probably apply to our suicidal gladiator😯.

In the end, Seneca himself was ordered to commit suicide because it was believed he was part of a plot to assassinate Nero (whom he had tutored as a child). Apparently Seneca botched the suicide and had a "slow and lingering" death.

The whole story--Gladiator, Nero plot, Seneca suicide--why haven't we seen the movie yet? 😄
