Sexy Italian Dude (L5, 1927)
Lately I have been getting more and more silver coins from Italy and today's piece is one of those.
A 5 Lire from 1927, featuring a sexy old dude on the front...
And a bad ass eagle on the back!
In case you wonder, the dude is Vittorio Emanuele III, King of Italy, who ruled from 1900 to 1946. Not a great time to rule, considering Italy got involved in two world wars and joined the axis forces. At least the guy seemed to have some brains and even advised Mussolini against going to war in 1939. Mussolini being a prick and everything had a different opinion and we all know how that went 😅
Now, there's two interesting facts I found out about him after checking him up.
The first is his height. Poor fella was almost a midget. and one of his nickname was Sciaboletta ("little saber") due to his height of just 1.53 m, lel.
And the other, is that he was one hell of a stacker. Too bad he is dead or he could make some great posts here on #silvergoldstackers 😂
Victor Emmanuel III was one of the most prolific coin collectors of all time, having amassed approximately 100,000 specimens dating from the fall of the Roman Empire up to the Unification of Italy and in 1897 becoming honorary president of the new Italian Numismatic Society, of which he was a founding member. On his abdication, the collection was donated to the Italian people, except for the coins of the House of Savoy which he took with him to Egypt. source
With a diameter of 23 mm, this coin has about the same size of a modern euro
5 grams of 0.835 purity. Sure, not much but probably more than enough to buy me a couple beers if (or more like when) the modern financial system breaks 🍻🍻🍻

The eagle isn't as nice as those german eagles, but still a nicely designed coin. Too bad for that dude that he was so short. Then again, I'm Sicilian... I know all about being short.

I find the topic quite interesting. Your coins reminded me that I have kept a coin that appears to be collectible, a 1964 dollar cent. The thing is I am not a collector, I have five or six and that's it, I have no idea who is looking for it, but they say it is valuable.
