Literal junk silver !
You may have heard the term junk silver, which is typically used for standard circulation U.S. coins minted prior to 1965. The reason they are called "junk" is because they contain no collectible or numismatic value. However, they are far from that, as their value is much higher than their face value as they are made of 90% silver.
Now, with that in mind, check out this coin I recently bought (mostly for the giggles) that is literally junk silver:
Cool as the design may be, this mexican peso coin is just 0.100 silver, lmao 🤣. No idea what was the thinking behind such a small purity. Although these coins are quite chunky at 16 g, that translates to just 1.6 g of silver XD
At least the really cool eagle eating a snake on the back makes up for the shitty composition.
As for the pirate-like dude on the front, he is Jose Morelos a national hero for Mexico credited with organizing and bolstering the War of Independence. Not a bad job considering he was just a priest!
José María Teclo Morelos Pérez y Pavón (30 September 1765 – 22 December 1815) was a Mexican Catholic priest, statesman and military leader who led the Mexican War of Independence movement, assuming its leadership after the execution of Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla in 1811. source and more info
In case you wonder , the coin reads
ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS
UN PESO 1961
For
United Mexican States
One Peso 1961
The edge is also engraved with
INDEPENDENCIA Y LIBERTAD
For
Independence and Liberty
This is a slogan closely associated with Mexico's struggle for independence from Spain, which began on September 16, 1810, and ended in 1821.
And that's pretty much about today's coin!
Btw, this is my first Mexican silver coin but soon I will have more from the country.... With a much better purity 🤣

Yeah that's a pretty junky amount of silver, but it's better than nothing.
Well it's an interesting and beautiful piece to own!
Geez. The coin cost that much?😂😂. Well, the pirate dude does look good.
It looks really nice though despite the low quality but with a lovely design.
I cannot imagine why they would put 10% silver in a coin... except maybe to be able to "legitimately" be able to market them as "silver coins" for some reason. Or maybe it was something like certain WWII era US nickels where there was some silver (35%?) used in place of nickel which was in short supply for weapons and other stuff? Anything historically "weird" happening in Mexico, in the early 1960s?
=^..^=
maybe just for the lulz XD
Is it first junk coin in your collection or there's more....Design of this one is still worth it tbh.
Nah that's the only one, got it mostly for the lulz
Perhaps a Un Peso of previous years (pre 1957) because they have a higher silver content, if you can find them:
These are the 1923, 1926, and 1944 Mexican Un Peso. They are 16.6 g in weight and .72 silver.
But .10 silver is still .10 silver!
oO you has everything!
Nice design, but junkie silver ratio embedded in the coin.
One question that I wanted to ask: is it a good price to pay 1 Euro per gram per Silver coin with a purity of 900/925?
It's not great but not terrible. Premiums often get quite high these days 🥲
Any silver is good, eh? But that is a pretty low percentage.
That's sterling silver and then there's poop silver!
The eagle grabbing the snake is a badass reverse no doubt. Those 10% silver coins were minted during the years of the mining shut down, that’s why so little silver is in them.
Ahh I see. Makes sense then
That is some awesome shit! I love Mexican silver!
Adding more soon!
Maybe they like buying junk silver because it's cheaper and having more makes them feel better?
Apparently there was a silver shortage that time according to @silverd510 comment!
I don't know but these day, I'm liking the coins with the animals picture on it, it could be dragon also.
It is fun to have a variety of coins to add to your collections of precious metals.
Well, this is an interesting and cheap piece, that's for sure!
I have many of the 50 Centavos "versions" of your UN PESO Mexican Coin... They're about the size of a Half Dollar U.S. Coin...
Nice!
The way we see it, there are many people who believe in Salul and are buying it, and if we invest in it, within the next three years, we will grow a lot. Can earn more good profit.
if you're a Mexican and want everybody to know your baby boy will be a true chad you have to call him Maria :)))
Mexico got to be taking the crown for junk king with this coin 🤣
😂
