CITIUS ALTIUS FORTIUS, Part 3

avatar

This is the third and last 10 Mark coin minted in commemoration of the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich.

Once again, we have a pretty bad ass eagle on the front

The lettering sticks to the basics, featuring the denomination (10 deutsche marks) and the words "BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND" for "Federal Republic of Germany".

Moving on the other side we have what seems to be some sorts of intertwined ribbons

According to numista this engraving is supposed to be a partial view of the Olympic rings, which in case you live in a cave looks something like this:

(Public domain, via wikipedia)

Yeah, not even close I think and a pretty wasted coin design imo.

Speaking of the Olympic rings.. I have never wondered what's the symbolism behind them.. Since they are 5 I'll take a guess and say it's about the 5 continents being in union or some shit. Meh, I'll ask chatgbt:

The five Olympic rings are a symbol of the Olympic Games and represent the union of the five inhabited regions of the world: Europe, Asia, Africa, the Americas, and Oceania. The rings are interlocked to symbolize the unity and solidarity of the world's athletes and the Olympic movement

Dang. I am a genius 😂

The coin's edge is engraved with the same words as the last two 1972 German coins I showed you:

CITIUS ALTIUS FORTIUS

For

Faster, Higher, Stronger

As a reminder, this is a motto that was adopted by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1894 and has since become a widely recognized symbol of the Olympic movement.

And once again we have 15.5 g of 0.635 purity. Yeah, 0.635 is a bit on the low side but the sexy eagle and the decent weight makes up for it. Almost 10 g of silver.

And that concludes my collection of silver German marks from the 1972 Olympics!

All three eagles are quite sexy if you ask me, but if I had to choose one it would be the one from today!

After doing a bit of googling, it seems there are two more designs made for this event. This one and this one

If you happen to own any of the two and you'd like to sell em let me know in the comments below :)

I like the robotic eagles, somehow they transpire Germany as they seem to be birds of steel. Nice silver coins growing your collection with each addition!

Ahan, the mighty eagle strikes again with it's beautify.

The back is pretty interesting... When you focus a bit on it feels like there's a shark and blade instead of rings.

I don't see the shark, but I am not the most imaginative person 😂

You sure you’re not part German with all these German coins you have. Maybe you are one of Hitlers long lost grand kids….🤣🤣🤣

Wow, in spite of being around 50 years old, all these coins are looking so clean and shining. The Eagle designs are also perfectly crafted and the words that are crafted at the side of the coins - ‘Faster, Higher, Stronger’ really indicates the energy and motivation it shows to the olympic players. I am from India and I also possess the hobby of collecting old coins and even have some from British colonial era before 1947. Really enjoyed the post ❤️

What I like the most about this coin is the engraving on the edge.

Beautiful set of silver coins. @trumpman.
But for fun I'd change the edge lettering to best collectively describe Brussels and western Leadership ...

"Imperium; Auctoritas, avarior, stupidior!"

Which means, "Government; Authoritarian, greedier, and stupider!"
