A Visionary Between Zeroes and Ones (10 Euro, 2010)

What's up plebs!

I come to you bearing once again a silver commemorative coin from Germany, and this one has a pretty interesting design !

So clearly this coin is dedicated to someone called Konrad Zuse whom I have never heard before. But if I was to take a guess I'd say he is a mathematician or maybe a cryptographer?

Well close enough! After checking up on him I felt ashamed for my knowledge of history. Turns out he was quite a big thing. He is regarded by many after all as the father of modern computers!

Konrad Ernst Otto Zuse (German: [ˈkɔnʁaːt ˈtsuːzə]; 22 June 1910 – 18 December 1995) was a German civil engineer, pioneering computer scientist, inventor and businessman. His greatest achievement was the world's first programmable computer; the functional program-controlled Turing-complete Z3 became operational in May 1941. Thanks to this machine and its predecessors, Zuse is regarded by some as the inventor and father of the modern computer. source

I actually halted writing this post for over an hour reading up on his life, Konrad did work on some really interesting projects from his early life to his death. I highly suggest you to check up on him.

Btw, the z1, z2 codes etc etc left and right on the coin are the computers he worked on. Here's a replica photo of Z1 his first computer:

Old computers just look so bad ass 😍

There are also some punched cards on the top and there is some short of binary message in the middle of the coin that I am too dumb to read. Maybe one of our hive geniuses like @dalz or @themarkymark can help? Fuck it, I'll even tag @blocktrades for the lulz. Here's a close up:

First one to decipher earns a virtual hug from me 🫂🤗

Ok, let's move on to the other side of the coin

As always, a unique design of the angry imperial chicken eagle. No surprises here. Germans love their chickens !

We also have the minting date (2010) and the denomination, 10 euro. Basic stuff.

And finally the edge

Messenger_creation_d9377c68-23b7-4427-91db-74d340475128.jpeg

It reads

KONRAD ZUSE - VISIONÄR ZWISCHEN NULL UND EINS

For

KONRAD ZUSE - VISIONARY BETWEEN ZERO AND ONE

Considering his work on computers, I'd say it's pretty self explanatory:)

And now let's talk silver! Usually the German coins I show you are 15.5 g of 0.625 purity. But the ones minted during the Euro era follow a different recipe.

Specifically, we have 18 g of 0.925 purity or 16.65 g of pure silver.

Now, that's much juicer :D

Ok friends, this concludes today's post.

This coin definitely stands up from most other German coins I have featured in the past and it's easily one of my favorites. If you are a computer geek I guess it is a must have!

As always, see you soon with more shiny!

I've always liked this image.

When the Raspberry Pi foundation released the Pi Zero, this image surfaced where it compared it to a computer from 58 years ago that had the same processing power.

After checking up on him I felt ashamed for my knowledge of history.

I studied computer education and I currently teach computer science. But I’ve never heard of the name as well. I should be double ashamed. 😅
Will do some more reading about him.

Nice coin. It's a nice thing to see and it's impressive to see how computers have evolved. To an extent, all those 0 and 1s end up creating some amazing stuff.

That is pretty cool. He made one monster of a machine there, definitely deserves his own commemorative coin. Very interesting, I hadn't heard of him either!

I can't wait until everyone is using our U.S. Electronic Coinage... One Electronic Cent ($0.0100) will be equal to 100 Electronic Decimal Cents... Notice the 1's and 0's...
