5 Deutsche Mark, Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen, 1968 (+ ruffle update)

Been a while since I shared a German coin from my collection. Let's pull a random one from the pile and see what we get!

Looks like we got some fancy old white dude called Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen (30 March 1818 – 11 March 1888) that I have never heard of before. As for the coin, it's a 5 mark from 1968.

Apparently, Friedrich was a big deal for his era, being a leading figure in the development of financial cooperatives, in both Europe and around the world, inspiring many other pioneers in the field who in turn set up banks or credit unions at the beginning of the 20th century. He is probably best known for creating the first cooperative lending bank, in effect the first rural credit union in 1864.

Motivated by the misery of the poor during the winter famine of 1846/47 he founded the “Verein für Selbstbeschaffung von Brod und Früchten” (Association for Self-procurement of Bread and Fruits). He bought flour with the help of private donations. The bread was baked in a community-built bakery and distributed on credit to the poorest amongst the population. A bread society as well as an aid society were founded in 1849 in Flammersfeld, and a benevolent society was created in 1854 in Heddesdorf. The societies were pre-cooperative organizations based on the principle of benevolent assistance. source

Yeah, no surprises here. A unique design of the imperial chicken, minting date and the denomination value of 5 Deutsch Marks.

Fyi, the coin was minted in 1968 for the 150th Anniversary since his birth.

As for the edge, it is inscribed with the words

EINER FÜR ALLE - ALLE FÜR EINEN

Which translates to

One for All · All for One

I guess a quote that makes total sense considering his work. There's even a book about him with this exact title 😄

Composition

When it comes to silver, it's a typical commemorative German coin. 0.625 purity with a weight of 11.2 g, which gives us exactly 7 g of pure silver.

Today's spot price stands at $0.74, giving us a melting value of 5.18 $.
