What's up plebs?

In today's post I am sharing on of the handful silver coins I have from Serbia.

A 1 Dinar from 1912! Let's check it out:

As the Cyrillic text (ПЕТАР I. КРАЉ СРБИЈЕ SCHWARTZ) informs us, the obverse of the coin features a portrait of "Peter I King of Serbia".

Peter I (11 July - 16 August 1921) reigned during a period of great Serbian military success and as a result he was remembered by Serbians as King Peter the Liberator and as the Old King.

During his time the country saw many reforms with his reign considered as the “Golden Age of Serbia”, due to the unrestricted political freedoms, free press, and cultural ascendancy among South Slavs who finally saw in democratic Serbia a Piedmont of South Slavs. source.

In 1918 he also ecame the first king of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes, after world war I and kept the title until his death three years later.

Anyways, this is just a super quick rundown about this old dude, feel free to visit Wikipedia if you want to learn more about him :)

Let's now check the or l coin from the reverse:

Again in Cyrillic, we have the Denomination and date. 1 ДИНАР for 1 Dinar.

The dinar is still the currency of Serbia, since the medieval times, with the earliest use dating back to 1214! Of course it has gone several revisions and shit. Today 1 Dinar is about 0.0093.

As for the coin in this post, it stopped being legal tender in 1920, when the first modern dinar was replaced by the Yugoslav Dinar.

As for the edge of the coin, it's just milled. No engravings or anything else special. Sorry, no photo because I would need to rip the paper capsule thingie.

Ok, these are the super basic historic facts about this coin. As always, feel free to click any of the links above to expand your knowledge :)

When it comes to the previous silver, the coin has a juicy 0.835 purity with a total weight of 5 g. That amounts to 4.175 grams of silver.

I asked chatgbt what this kind of money could buy me back 1912, here's what it came up with:

In 1912, the price of silver varied, but let's assume an approximate value. If we take a rough average of the silver price around that time, it was about $0.50 per gram. With 4 grams of silver, you could have bought goods or services equivalent to $2 in 1912.

In 1912, with approximately $2 worth of silver, you could have bought items such as a loaf of bread, a dozen eggs, a pound of butter, or a couple of pounds of sugar.

Sounds like that this small coin had lots of value back then :) Of course Chatgpt is known for making shit up so take the above with a grain of salt ^_^

Ok friends, this is it for today!

See you soon with more silver !

And today I buy 2 loaves of rye bread (600 grams each) for 2 HIVE. I think the AI made a mistake with the 1912 prices.

Bard seems to have done a better job

In 1912, 4 grams of silver would have been worth approximately $0.24. This is based on the average price of silver in 1912, which was $0.58 per troy ounce. A troy ounce is equal to 31.1034768 grams, so 4 grams of silver is equal to approximately 0.1286 troy ounces.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, $0.24 in 1912 would have the equivalent purchasing power of approximately $3.52 today. This means that 4 grams of silver in 1912 could have bought approximately the same amount of goods and services as $3.52 can buy today.

I don't think the coin does his mustache justice. That's a pretty epic mustache in the photo.
