What’s tiny, shiny, and worth more than your entire networth?

A dime! Yes a good ol' dime!

Ok, ok, not any dime!

This is one of those occasional crazy auction stories I like to share.

So, a few days ago on October 27 the following coin exchanged hands with a winning bid of $506,250:

What makes this coin so special and rare is that it misses the "S" mark indicating it was struck in San Francisco.

Only two of these dimes are known to exist today and it is regarded as one of the rarest if not the rarest modern error coins.

This is the Grail of modern coins, one that is missing from the Smithsonian, ANS and ANA institutional collections source

In total there were over 200 bids from collectors all over the world, including Germany, Japan, U.K. and of course the U.S.

The previous owners had acquired the coin about 50 years ago in 1978 for $18,200. Even with inflation adjusted that is a pretty good profit. Not as good as buying btc in 2010 but close enough 😂

Reportedly, the new owner plans to hold it for the exact same amount of years as the previous one before putting it out in the market.

So yeah. Crazy. Over half a million for a tiny little dime.

Really makes you wonder how filthy rich some of these collectors are if they are willing to burn so much money for just one silver coin. Rare as it may be!

Scarcity is a great thing when you own it! I wish I had one of those beauties... But no way in hell I would pay half a million for one! Insane!

So it's a defective dime with no mint mark. Should be worth less 😄 Cool story though. Will have to check mi coins from now on, just in case.

It's crazy how a dime goes for so much. Then again, I guess it being rare is one of things that those rich collectors can brag about.
