Târgu Mureș Zoo, discover the captivating world of animals

I don't know how it happened, but exactly on the last day of October I had the opportunity to make a short visit to a city that I adore, I have been here several times and I am very happy to see that it is in continuous development.

And yes, it's about Târgu Mureș, even if since entering the city I was caught in a traffic jam because of road works I didn't mind at all, probably in a short time the city will wear new clothes.

Even though we saw that some of the sights in the city center, such as the Palace of Culture, have already been renovated, today we're not visiting the city, but we're going somewhere 4 kilometers away to explore the animal world at the Târgu Mureș Zoo.

After 15 minutes of driving we arrive in a forest (the GPS guided us), wow, the zoo stretches over several dozens of acres in this forest, fascinating, we left the car in the huge parking lot and we continued our way to the entrance.

After another 500 meters walk through this forest we reach the ticket office, at first glance it seems that the season is over, many of the stalls here are already closed until next season.

The cost of an entrance ticket is 25lei/5euro/person/adult and the visiting program is from Monday to Sunday from 09-18, the zoo can be visited all year round.

I noticed quite a lot of people running on a specially created forest trail.

Below is a brief history of the zoo.

The idea of creating a zoo in Târgu Mureș emerged after theSecond World War, in 1948, when the Târgu Mureș hunter Brunó Grosszman started negotiations with hunting and nature protection circles in Bucharest with the aim of establishing a zoo in the county seat. The location was chosen on the Cornești plateau, as the area has always been a favorite excursion destination for the inhabitants of Targu Mures. The large forest, mentioned since the 15th century, made up of native oaks and beeches, with an area of about 500 hectares, provided the ideal setting for the zoo.

In 1964, the city administration commissioned László Rend, an agricultural engineer specialized in animal husbandry, with the creation of the zoo. He had previously been director of the small animal breeding station in Târgu Mureș. Surrounded by enthusiastic volunteers and experts, he helped set up the first nucleus of the zoo, which occupies about 600-700 square meters. When the gates opened on August 23, 1964,[5] the animal collection numbered 10 specimens: three wolves, two bears, two wild boars, two pheasants and a deer, all donated by the hunting society. The zoo was extended in 1965 to 20 hectares and later reached its present size. In 1967 the lion pavilion, the zoo's first larger building, was completed, built by the students of the professional building school.

It is currently home to around 750 animals, representing over 150 local and exotic species. As well as being the largest zoo in Romania in terms of surface area, it is the only one to have elephants, giraffes and gibbons. Thanks to its continuous development, the zoo offers new attractions for visitors every year, including the country courtyard showcasing native species as well as new habitats with animal access. Ongoing educational activities take place in the zoo.

As I expected, the zoo is like a book that you can discover by walking through its alleys full of colorful leaves fallen from the trees.

A place of discovery and fascination especially for children, here you can also find strollers to make the children's visit even more amazing.

We met many fascinating species of animals here, I liked that they have a lot of space available, I will leave you below to see our experience here through pictures.

We spent around two hours here, we were lucky with perfect weather to explore every corner.

After our time here we got a bit hungry so we couldn't leave until we ate a langoș with cream and cheese, rainbow on the palate.
