Peri-Săpânța Monastery (Romania) and the tallest wooden church in Europe

Hello travelers from all over the world

I'm glad to be here with you again today and to share again an amazing place probably unique in the world, the Peri Monastery in Săpânța.

If you take a look at one of my last posts you will see that I introduced you to another amazing monastery here in the Maramureș area (Bârsana monastery), but this is today the most visited monastery by believers from all parts of Romania and what's more, inside the monastery is built the tallest wooden church in Europe.

As a location, the monastery is very close to other important tourist attractions in the Maramureș area, so if you ever visit this area, you will have many sights to put on the map.

We arrived here by car, the monastery has a very large parking lot so don't worry about that.

After a few steps we passed under a gate made in the authentic Maramuresan style and further on a wide alley that takes you through parks with flowers or green areas, and yes, the place is impeccable.

I forgot to tell you that Peri-Sapanta is a nunnery.

Walking down that alley, looking at the beautiful flowers on one side of the edge and on the other side at the green area, suddenly in front of me appears the wooden church inside the monastery, wow, it was so tall.

Peri-Săpânța Monastery has a very controversial history, the first information about the monastery appear somewhere around 1391 after which other dates are given in which the monastery seems to have been destroyed, but today I will leave below some more current dates.

The current monastery in Săpânța was built between 1997-2003 and was founded by the parish priest Grigore Luțai. It is located near the Tisa River, in the middle of a dendrological park where there are over 36 species of trees and 1000 secular trees.
The wooden church was built from fir wood and local craftsmen were employed. More than 8.5 kg of gold, 400 cubic meters of wood and the cross at the top is wrapped in four kilograms of gold.
The church is 75-78 m high, supposedly the tallest wooden church in the world (nothing official). The church spire is visible from 5 km away and is a landmark for worshippers on both sides of the Tisza.
Impressive is the staircase that leads to the chapel, carved from a single 300-year-old wood, which was carved with a chisel and a bard, according to the priest.

The church is built on three levels, the top cross measures seven meters, and at the bottom you can enter inside the church, I entered inside the church and I climbed to the first level where you can see the entire monastic complex.

At first glance the interior of the church is quite small, even though there were many people visiting the interior of the church there was an amazing silence.

I sat on a chair for a few minutes and then up some carved wooden stairs to the first level.

And here I was speechless to see the dedication and attention to detail in terms of wood carving, something impressive.

You can spend as much time as you want here, there is no visitation fee, unless you want to go home with a souvenir handcrafted by these nuns.

In conclusion, if somehow you are in the Maramures area do not forget to put on the map and this amazing monastery, it is worth to break a few hours of your time to spend a few hours to spend in silence and inner retreat.
