Christmas Market in Oradea, the magic of the holidays has taken over this Romanian city

Hello guys

In my last post here in the community I presented you how the Christmas Market in Arad looks like and also there I wrote that I planned to visit three Christmas Markets in Romania in this last month of 2024, the one in Arad, the one in Oradea and the last one would be the one in Craiova.

And here we found time to visit two of them, so today we will go together to the Christmas Market in Oradea.

If you check my older posts you will find several posts in which we present many sights here in Oradea but today is different some of the sights that I have presented you some time ago today I will show you how they have changed after they have put on holiday clothes.

Christmas Market in Oradea opened its doors on November 29, 2024 and will close its doors on December 26, 2024 and the opening hours are daily between 16-22 hours, on weekends it opens a little faster, access is free.

This year, as in previous years, the Christmas fair will be held in two locations in the center of Oradea, in Unirii Square and Ferdinand Square.

To better understand the importance of the two locations I will leave you some historical information:

Unirii Square
The center of the district, called the New Town, located on the left bank of the Crișul Repede, was formed between 1714 - 1740 with a main square called the Small Square (Kispiac tér, Szent László tér), today's Union Square.
The appearance of the square began to take shape after the fire of 1836, as only the three churches remain from the period before this event: The Roman Catholic Church of St. Ladislaus (1720 - 1733), the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary - Church with the Moon (1784 - 1832), the Greek Catholic Cathedral of St. Hierarch Nicholas (1800 - 1810). In the 19th century the Kováts House was built in the classical style and the one-story house on the corner of Teleki Street (Town Hall Street). The square was about 7200 square meters.
This part of the city has played a central role for a long time, although it did not meet modern requirements, in 1869 the square was not paved, it was ugly with tents and kiosks. So the city council of the time decided to turn the square into a park, with paths and resting places.
Two decades later, the square was remembered as the most beautiful square of the New Town, planted with linden and plane trees, surrounded by three churches and one-story houses.

Ferdinand Square
In the Oradea-Olosig district there is a central square with an unmistakable architectural charge.

The square has the shape of a triangle, the base side is formed in the area of the current theater, the middle angle is slightly inclined. The square was formed as a result of the reconstruction of the city, the building achievements of the 18th century.

Our visit here we started it right through the Black Eagle Passage (if you search through my posts you will find more information about this place), through this passage we can get directly to the Unirii Square, but before we got there we admired how beautifully decorated this place was.

I saw a lot of very happy children because they could ride on Santa's streetcar, and I would have gone with him, but we ran out of space, there were even a lot of parents with their children waiting to get on, the ride was free.

Our next stop is right in front of the City Hall and the City Hall Tower, two other emblematic places in the center of Oradea.

Let's visit some of the stalls in Unirii square, I chose to drink a hot chocolate, I know, a mulled wine was good but I was in the car so no alcohol.

After visiting the stalls in Unirii Square we walk a few hundred meters and move to the second location, Ferdinand Square and here turned our eyes towards the State Theater, an imposing building.

Here we were able to see the first ecological ice rink that does not use water or electricity, as it is made of special materials.

Wow, that I call some really awesome Christmas decorations. The German in me immediately thought - that must be a very high electricity bill hahaha - but it looks really beautiful!

When you want something to look amazing or at least to be something else it comes with certain sacrifices/costs, this applies to both bright decorations in cities or even in our home.

I think it is worth the financial effort because December is unique/magical.
I hope this month I will be able to make it to a Christmas fair here in Romania (the latest information gives it as the second most beautiful Christmas fair in Europe) it's a bit far from where I live, and from last I checked I saw that the prices for accommodation have exploded in that city.
There are even more bright decorations there than in the two fairs I have presented so far.

Thank you very much for visiting and have a wonderful Sunday.
