Cantacuzino Castle, on the traces of history and Romanian legends
An enchanted place with princes and princesses
History is the witness that confirms the passage of time, illuminates reality, vitalizes memory, offers guidance in everyday life and brings us news from antiquity. Marcus Tullius Cicero
Hello everyone
Lately I've been away from here because of a cold that kept me tied to the bed, but I'm back in force and I want to share with you an emblematic place for the history of Romania.
Today I want to visit Cantacuzino Castle.
Where is this castle located?
Cantacuzino Castle is located in one of the resorts on the Prahova valley, namely in Busteni resort.
Prahova Valley is an area known throughout Romania and even in Europe for its mountain resorts.
How did we get here?
We live in the west of Romania so we had to follow the national road 7 until we got on the highway that leads to Sibiu and at one point we took it towards Fagaras and further towards Brasov and the resorts of the Prahova valley until we reached the resort of Busteni, a journey of about 5 and a half hours.
It is worth mentioning that the castle does not have its own parking lot and you have to park your car on the side streets, don't be scared it's ok to leave your car that way.
Cantacuzino Castle has a very interesting history initially it was built for Prince Gheorghe Grigore Cantacuzino somewhere between 1911-1913.
The area where the castle was built is an amazing one, from the castle garden or from anywhere around you can admire the Carpathian munitions, in the First World War it was used as a military hospital, after the end of the war this castle was left in disrepair.
From what the guide told us the castle was used as a sanatorium for a while, only after 1990 it was returned to the heirs of the Cantacuzino family and underwent capital repairs.
The guide also told us that inside the castle most of the valuables and original decorations have been stolen, they have never been recovered, most probably they are in the private collections of rich people who paid a lot of money to have them.
Cantacuzino Castle entered the tourist circuit and was opened to tourists only in 2003.
Apparently the beauty of the castle both outside and inside attracted the filmmakers, so last years this castle was the set for a season of the production of WEDNESDAY - NEVERMORE ACADEMY, starring actress Jenna Ortega, this season is running on NetFlix, that's where I saw it and it really managed to impress me seeing it and knowing that millions of people around the world are watching it.
Schedule and Access to the Castle
At the main entrance of the castle there is a ticket office where you can buy the ticket you want, here you can choose to visit only the gardens or to visit everything (gardens, castle, art gallery), as we chose and the entrance ticket cost 55lei/11euro, from what I saw on their website they had their own parking which cost 5lei/1euro/3hours, but again we were not allowed access by car there.
Visiting hours are Monday-Sunday from 10-19.
Visiting the castle is done every hour only with a guide, that's what we did after we bought the tickets and we lined up at a solid wood door and waited to be picked up by the guide.
We didn't have much time to wait because I think there were more than 30 tourists and the guide came and we started exploring the inside of this castle, I'm sorry I can't give you all the details of the history of this castle because it would have been very interesting, so I leave you the pictures I took inside.
Inside I was actually speechless, I was amazed by the beauty of this castle, I saw inside solid wood furniture, the guide told us that many of the objects inside were donated.
We entered a very large room on the ground floor here above a fireplace is the very painting of Gheorghe Grigore Cantacuzino (Nababul) the person for whom this castle was built, the stained glass windows outside are special they have the faces of those who ruled here a few hundred years ago.
The interior doors are made of solid wood, all with the coat of arms of the royal family, and the flooring is special, being preserved the original one around the fireplace.
After visiting all the rooms on the ground floor we went upstairs, here we found many works of art, paintings, pictures of the royal family, pictures of the inside of the castle as it looked at the beginning.
Visiting the castle inside took about an hour and a half, that depends on each one if he/she stays to read the information displayed at each exhibit.
After we finished exploring this castle we got hungry so on the way back home here in Busteni resort we stopped at a Romanian restaurant to eat, I'll leave you some pictures taken there.
My dear followers and visitors here ends the adventure through the history of this castle in Busteni resort, Prahova Valley, I hope you will enjoy this place and maybe at some point you will think to come here.

Cantacuzino sounds Italian and even the castle looks Italian. Actually, I would say that it looks like places in South Tyrol. I would never say that this is a place in Romania 🙂 You don't need to travel far to get to amazing places and take great photos.
I'm glad to hear that you're doing better. I've also been inactive during the last couple of weeks as I'm back at home spending time with my family.
Thank you for sharing!
Family time is most important.
These days we celebrate Easter and gather the whole family around the table to spend the holidays as a family.
The castle is very beautiful and is built in the neo-Romanesque style, yes, it may be similar in style to other castles in other areas.
