Traveling the World #336 - Maruyama Park @ Sapporo, Japan
Hi Everyone,
Sapporo has many outdoor areas which is why it is a popular destination in Japan for those who want to get away from the busy city life. Although it is a major city, the space it offers doesn’t feel like you are too crammed with lots of outdoor space. Maruyama Park is an example where it has the famous Hokkaido shrine, zoo, baseball stadium, and more. As we were visiting in Winter, the park looked pretty plain but normally you could see cherry blossoms in spring and red leaves in autumn.
As we walk into the park, there were lots of talk trees which gives us a very nice peaceful vibe. It was also very quiet, everything seems very spaced out and doesn’t feel like you are a few km away from Sapporo. There are some wildlife in the park and also bird spotting is available. The park has put up signs around to let visitors hunt for different birds. There are over a dozen kids of birds you can spot, great activity if you have kids like us.
We also saw lots of possums. They are very different from the ones we see back home and photo enthusiasts had their long lense cameras ready. We saw at least 6 photo groups taking photos of nature and wildlife in the park. The kids also stood around to catch the possum action and some have already made homes up on the trees. They were quite cute but there were signs advising visitors don’t feed the animals and birds. I guess this is to avoid any sickness to these animals plus reduce the mess made around the park.
It is best to visit the park on a fine day as there is no shelter apart from the cafe in the middle of the park. You can also take the opportunity to visit the Hokkaido Shrine, the zoo if you are fond of animals or see a game at the local stadium if you are there at the right time. We took a cab to the park as it was much easier with the kids and cost-effective though there is public transport available but requires some walking. We ended up taking public transport when we left as we walked to the other side of the park and it was much closer than where we started.

Love nature and greenery and I'm loving the straightness of the trees. Japan is one of the Asian countries I wish to visit in the near future.

Great photos! It's nice to see the Hokkaido shrine like this. I love to visit Maruyama because I can feel Sapporo’s good old atmosphere.
yep the shrine was the reason we visited the park, it was nice to get away from the city centre :)
