Food Sharing #280 - Peking Restaurant @ Kensington, Australia
Hi Everyone,
Kensington is a land of cheap eats as it is close to the University of NSW. Food around uni has a reputation of cheap and cheerful with servings feeding two people. As COVID hit, many overseas students have not been able to come here to study so the area has been pretty quiet. Lots of restaurants have closed down and very few have opened up to fill in those empty spaces. We rarely go to Kensington now as we have no need to go back to uni but we were close by recently so we decided to look for something to eat.
We noticed a new restaurant has opened up called Peking restaurant. It doesn’t look like a student priced restaurant but we still wanted to try it as the menu prices still looked somewhat reasonable. Let’s have a look at the menu. We have ordered a plate of dumplings, chicken and cabbage soup & salted egg prawns.
The food was pretty average and for the price, it is considered poor value at Kensington. If the food were a bit tastier, we may give it a pass but the soup was very very bland. I don’t like to eat salty food but this soup was next level, I think the chef forgot to put any seasoning in which was disappointing. It was healthy though with the chicken, cabbage, and vermicelli but the taste was disappointing.
The dumping was average and the salted egg prawns probably were the tastiest of the whole meal. It was a chef’s recommended dish and although not the best version, it was a pass. Chinese tea was not included like all the other restaurants on the main strip which I guess they may have a hard time sustaining business if they don’t change a little. Students and locals are used to great food, low prices with big servings, they seemed to not have ticked any of those boxes which were disappointing. Don’t think we will visit this restaurant again.

The restaurant looks very quiet and that's also the impact of the Covid pandemic that has hit the world, but the food looks very good. @travelgirl 😁👍

It called my attention to your post because I've never seen a restaurant in Australia! I mean, I've never been there.
It's sad that the new restaurant wasn't so good compared with the others that you have visited, but anyway, it's always good to give a chance to new stores. :)
