My Take On What Is Love

1 Corinthians 13:4–8a (ESV) Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth.

When asked what is love romantically, one thing will always come to my mind, and that is the definition given in the Bible. This has been my truth and the set of standards that I had when I entered a relationship with my ex-girlfriend and now wife, April.

Love is patient and kind

We knew each other since 2012. Both of us are working in a call center in Santa Rosa and were buddies in training back then. From the taste of music, set of values, and beliefs, we are a match, I can say. However, there was a slight problem both of us are in a committed relationship.

She had a long-term relationship, while I just started on mine, which ended quickly too.

I didn't pursue her back then and backed out because I didn't want to ruin a relationship. Fast forward: they ended the relationship in 2014 and that is when I enter the screen and didn't let go. I had shown my best foot forward while we were dating and I think still I do that.

Love does not envy or boast

Back when we are dating, there are times wherein I felt envious of small stuff. Time and moments together are something that I value. There are moments wherein I ask myself who loves more? Is it me or her?

When I am in that downward situation, I remember, what does it help? Am I being boastful to her if I love her more than she was or vice versa?

We learn more about how to communicate with each other's needs. I am someone who needs to be assured that whatever stuff I do will be supported 100% and her having someone to rely on and listen to is a must.

it is not arrogant or rude.

Moments of disagreements happen. You can always get mad but still be in the head and respectful. We learned it is important to keep quiet about ourselves and try to work things together. I am a bad talker and this is a reminder for me not to be one.

It does not insist on its own way;

One says I love the person thus I will change them but as the song of The Carpenters

You've got to love me for what I am
For simply being me
Don't love me for what you intend
Or hope that I will be

We let things happen, though we have the things that we want to change preferences. Like me being a picky eater, she endures it. I am working on not being a picky eater as I need to set an example for our daughter, but this is something that I grew up with.

it is not irritable or resentful

The people who you love most are the people who will hurt you the most. Do you agree with that? We commit if a mistake, we both agreed to forgive one. I've seen her being irritable and so am I with little things, but getting even doesn't help at all.

To cope with being irritable, I clean our home, especially the bathroom tiles, making it white.

When we did something wrong to one another, we felt bad. I am quiet and reflect on the stuff that I did wrong. But once we reconciled, we order some food, pizza or milk tea, or even some food that we haven't eaten for a while since we are away from the city.

So yeah this it what I think about love and the personal meaning of it.
