How Tolerance Taught Me.

From my story, it's right to say one of the most common issue that could result in conflicts in workplace derives from jealousy.
I have been there and I had to bare and put up with my mate’s attitude alongside my boss who chose to turn a blind eye to everything.

That period was one am sure not to forget in a hurry because it ended with a long ride of tolerance.

Ever had a competitive threat?

That was my situation. And it should have been uncalled for, assuming my boss wasn't enjoying too much of the drama. Just as every company has its policies and various heads of department, my boss’s company was no different but a little slack when it came to following orders among workers.

After a year of working with my boss, I became the senior worker shortly after the graduation of my previous head. Our work was all about cakes and pastries. So logically, I was next in line after my boss.
A while later, we had a new worker, who didn't just work with us but lived with my boss as a housekeeper too. It was all going well before it wasn't and it happened the exact moment my boss was involved in a domestic accident that fractured her right leg and kept her on crutches for months.

Those periods weren't easy. I mean it wasn't easy meeting up with my home and staying back overnight at work to meet up with urgent orders and the same time making sure to help my mom out too with chores and my younger siblings.

Yet, I still got to bear with the frustration of my mate who was hellbent on making sure my boss found fault in me. It started with her giving the attitude of “Don't send me on errands” We were to share the workloads among ourselves and then moved over to turning the rest workers against me.

I overheard one of their conversations and one of them reported to me.

This went on for a long while, I could only advertise the problem I could predict and bear the fault of the ones that I couldn't defend myself for knowing she was behind it. There was so little I could do because of my boss's condition at the time.

Until one faithful day when I slept over at work to meet up the preparation of meat pie by 5:00 am. Unfortunately that day, it was just her and myself that stayed back and that was how the whole of that day went wrong. Since I knew she didn't appreciate me dividing the workload for her, I began working myself and she soon joined in only to put ingredients in a mixture I was already working on and it was terrible since I already added everything. At that point, I couldn't hold back and screamed at her instead. In her defense, I didn't tell her and she wasn't aware that I was fully done with the mixture, and in mine, she never asked and now the work is spoilt.

Our little exchange attracted my boss who in the end faulted both of us. I was hurt by some of the statements she made but decided to ignore everything and everyone else focusing on my work, and that helped in the long run until my mate was finally exposed by a fellow worker who went to my boss to show her a group chat message opened by her and all the ill words she said about her and many others.
My mate was later punished with those that were involved too but everything that came before that led me through a tolerable journey that am in no hurry to forget.

Some bosses lack the skill of handling conflicts among junior colleagues. Envy cannot be ruled out in workplaces and that's where you stay ahead by achieving more stakes including your academia and skill to bring about a significant difference, perhaps widening the margin of envy but importantly, creating a difference in status and relevance. Happy weekend to you.
