Before the game
One of the privileges that the semifinal play-offs of baseball in Cuba have given me is to be able to enjoy the classic of Cuban baseball, the emblematic encounter of this sport and the one that is most enjoyed throughout the length and breadth of the country.
It is true that many who are not from these two teams want their teams to win the championship, but if you make a poll and ask for the dream final in our tournament the vast majority will say that the confrontation is between Santiago de Cuba and Industriales.
When that happens, the country is divided in two: East and West. On the one hand, those who go to Santiago de Cuba representing the eastern region and on the other Industriales representing the western region of the country. And, on this occasion I could not enjoy them in a final, but in a semifinal, which is not a problem because these teams face each other to kill or die, in each of their matches.
But, today's publication is not to analyze the play off of these teams, maybe I will do it in a later publication, but to value the game from the inside: the stadium, the fans, the initiatives by each of the fans, the offers, the chants and everything else that makes it possible for us to watch this sporting wonder called baseball.
Brief Competitive History and Results
When you review the history of Cuban baseball you are in the presence of two of the teams that have won more national tournaments and in the case of Industriales is the team with more trophies in their trophy cabinets.
Great players of the national baseball have played in these classics and names like Braudilio Vinent, Antonio Pacheco, Orestes Kindelán, Manuel Alarcón, Elpidio Mancebo for the Easterners or Pedro Chávez, Rey Vicente Anglada, Pedro Medina, Agustín Marquetti, Santiago Changa Mederos, Armando Capiró for Industriales would serve to understand the quality of the Cuban baseball classics.
It is true that those illustrious names are no longer there, but the rivalry remains and the unlimited dedication presides over the sporting matches.
Buying a ticket to the stadium
When I arrived at the stadium I had to buy tickets to get in. It is true that the price is symbolic and that there were not many people in line, but when I entered the stadium all the boxes were occupied, so I had to go to the stands, as my ticket said.
The fans
Once inside the stadium came one of the dilemmas of everyone who goes to the Estadio Latinoamericano: where to sit, because when the classic is played there are two options: Either you are from Santiago or you are from Industriales.
In my case, it is true that I live in Havana, where Industriales play, but my team from Las Tunas is from the eastern part of the country and Santiago represents that geographical area of the country. The decision was as follows: as I was walking I would only play part of the game at first base where the visiting team (Santiago de Cuba) was playing and then I would be at third base where the home team (Industriales) was playing.
Initiatives by sides
Not many initiatives were presented by the stadium, but, the fans of both sides imagined songs, choruses, phrases that made the more serious fans laugh. Likewise, when one of the teams was about to take its turn at bat, the conga of that team would start as a way to encourage their players.
As a matter of respect or an unwritten rule, the other fans would wait in silence and would only yell if their team's defense got an out, made a great play or the pitcher struck out a batter.
The chants from both sides
Something that embellishes these classics are the famous chants. There is one in particular that is legendary and is chanted by the Eastern teams. It turns out that the Industriales are called the Leones de la capital and as you know the lions roar. Well, when Industriales pitchers get hit or the team is losing the fans chant: Ruge Leona, Ruge Leona.
However, on this occasion I heard a response from the Industriales fans that I had not heard before and that was surely the result of popular ingenuity: Chicharritas, Chicharrones, Industriales, the champions.
The children and their parents
One of the things that caught my attention was the large number of children in the stadium watching the game accompanied by their parents. This reminded me of the time when my dad used to take me to the stadium to watch baseball games.
The skin on the field
I witnessed a hard-fought baseball game and, beyond the final score and the mistakes made by one team or the other, what was not lacking was commitment and fighting for the jersey. When I asked one of the players how this classic would be, he answered: "It will be a life or death play-off and I am sure that every player will leave their skin on the field.
What was missing from this game to make it a higher quality spectacle?
We should think about selling T-shirts, caps and other souvenirs with the emblems and representative colors of both teams. In this way, the fans located in the stands of the Easterners would paint the stadium in red and black and on the other side the blue of the Industrialists would be represented.
Between innings, various initiatives can be carried out to make the stay at the game more enjoyable and to vary the motivations of the fans.
A final comment
It is true that our national sport is going through a structural crisis and baseball does not escape it. But, when one appreciates shows like this one, one realizes that this, more than a sport, means feelings and traditions, customs and culture, passions and emotions. What I experienced in this classic reflected that and much more.
