Sometimes it is thought that the only pleasure trips are the ones we take to the beach, a party or a hotel. However, I can assure you that the trip I just enjoyed was quite enjoyable and does not fall into any of those categories.

It so happens that, as part of my work at the Institute of Geology and Paleontology, I was invited to participate in the central activities for Science Day in Cuba and the beginning of the International Book Fair. I confess that I was not very happy because I thought it would be a tedious and tiring activity, but the organizers had planned a tour that, as soon as I found out, my face went from boredom to happiness.

The trip in question was through one of the most emblematic routes of Havana, Cuba and I would have the chance to be in sites considered by UNESCO as Historical and Cultural Heritage of Humanity: Fortress of San Carlos de la Cabaña.

Beginning of the tour

The tour began with the explanation of what would be our historical-cultural tour and the way in which we would make the tour. We would be essentially at Fortress of San Carlos de la Cabaña and from there we would move to the Petroleum Convention Center, where we would have lunch and the conclusions of the activity.

Fortress of San Carlos de la Cabaña

This is one of the most visited places in Havana and the venue of important cultural, scientific and economic events that take place in the country.
When you arrive at the place you realize the strategic importance of the place located at the entrance of the bay of Havana, capital of all Cubans. In the explanation the guide told us that this fortress was built during the Spanish colonial period to protect the city from attacks by corsairs and pirates.

There are several exhibition rooms on the site itself, which are impossible to visit in a single day. However, the ones we were taken to met my expectations and ratified the criteria I had and showed me others I was unaware of.

Encounter of Cultures Room

This was one of the most enjoyed because here the criterion that the Spaniards discovered Cuba was clarified and it was explained to us what actually happened: an encounter between cultures because when the Spaniards arrived in Cuba there were already natives from some regions of the continent, specifically from the Dominican Republic, on the island.

In the room itself we were able to observe images of the first inhabitants of our country and the productive activities carried out.
When we were on the tour we saw two passers-by who did not want to miss the photos, to be in the publication.

Replicas

In the hall itself, I was very impressed by the replicas of the boats in which the aborigines traveled to Cuba or used for their fishing activities. In the same place there are replicas of the boats in which the expedition commanded by Admiral Christopher Columbus came, named. "La Niña", "La Pinta" and "Santa María".
You can also appreciate navigation instruments used by the Spaniards and the utensils and objects elaborated by the aborigines.

The 9 o'clock cannon shot

One of the most important traditions of the Cuban capital is the 9 o'clock cannon shot. This event has lasted since the 19th century and has had different meanings. In its beginnings it announced to the inhabitants that it was time to close the city. Since several years ago it indicates 9 o'clock at night and it is an event that, many times, indicates the beginning of a cultural activity.
The tour guide explained this particular and took us to the place where this ceremony, one of the most representative events of the city and the country, takes place.

The Havana Lighthouse

I had never had the chance to go up to this place that was once the highest point in the city.
It is true that I was able to reach the top, but it was quite a challenge for this body that has stopped doing physical exercises at this age. I arrived very tired and sweating, but it was worth it because the views of the city of Havana that are observed from the height are beautiful.

While waiting to go down to the place where we would have lunch and resting from the exercise of climbing to the top of the lighthouse, I took some pictures of Havana. Lunch

After all the activity we finished with a very Cuban lunch with Parranda, the new Cuban beer.
The activity served to receive the Award of the Academy of Sciences of Cuba to one of our researchers and to the general director.

A final comment

It was an extraordinary evening, in which I had fun learning, which is one of the things I value and admire the most.
I continue to fulfill dreams and achieve dreams. I hope my health is good enough to continue achieving goals and consummating projects.

Una introducción necesaria

A veces se piensa que los únicos viajes de placer son los que realizamos a la playa, una fiesta o a un hotel. Sin embargo, puedo asegurar que el viaje que acabo de disfrutar lo he disfrutado bastante y no está en ninguna de esas categorías.

Sucede que, como parte de mi trabajo en el Instituto de Geología y Paleontología fui invitado a participar en las actividades centrales por el Día de la Ciencia en Cuba e inicio de la Feria Internacional del Libro. Les confieso que no estaba muy contento porque pensaba en una actividad tediosa y cansona, pero, los organizadores de la misma tenían concebido un recorrido que, en cuanto me enteré mi cara pasó del estado de ánimo de aburrimiento a felicidad.

El viaje en cuestión era por una de las rutas más emblemáticas de la Habana, Cuba y tendría la posibilidad de estar en sitios considerados por la UNESCO como Patrimonio Histórico y Cultural de la Humanidad: Fortaleza de San Carlos de la Cabaña.

Inicio del recorrido

El recorrido comenzó con la explicación de lo que sería nuestro tour histórico-cultural y la manera en la que realizaríamos el recorrido. Estaríamos, esencialmente en la Fortaleza de San Carlos de la Cabaña y de ahí nos trasladaríamos al Centro de Convenciones del Petróleo, lugar en el que almorzaríamos y serán las conclusiones de la actividad.

Este es uno de los lugares más visitados de la Habana y sede de importantes eventos culturales, científicos y económicos que se realizan en el país.
Cuando usted llega al lugar se percata de la importancia estratégica del lugar situado a la entrada de la bahía de la Habana, capital de todos los cubanos. En la explicación la guía nos comentó que esta fortaleza se mandó a construir durante la etapa de la colonia española, para proteger a la ciudad de los ataques de corsarios y piratas.

En el propio recinto hay varias salas expositivas a las que es imposible llegar en un solo día. Sin embargo, a las que nos llevaron cumplieron mis expectativas y me ratificaron criterios que tenía y me enseñaron otros que desconocía.

Sala encuentro entre culturas

Esta fue una de las más disfrutadas porque aquí se aclara el criterio de que los españoles descubrieron a Cuba y se nos explicó lo que en realidad sucedió: un encuentro entre culturas porque al llegar los españoles a Cuba ya había en la isla aborígenes de algunas regiones del continente, específicamente de República Dominicana.

Los primeros habitantes, actividades realizadas

En la propia sala pudimos observar imágenes de los primeros habitantes de nuestro país y las actividades productivas realizadas.
Cuando estábamos en el recorrido vimos dos transeúntes que no quisieron perderse las fotos, para salir en la publicación.

Réplicas

En la propia Sala me llamó mucho la atención las réplicas existentes sobre las embarcaciones en que se trasladaron los aborígenes hacia Cuba o que utilizaban para sus actividades de pesca. En el mismo lugar se aprecian réplicas de las embarcaciones en las que venía la expedición comandada por el almirante Cristóbal Colón nombradas. “la Niña”, “la Pinta” y “la Santa María”
También se pueden apreciar instrumentos de navegación utilizados por los españoles y los utensilios y objetos elaborados por los aborígenes.

El cañonazo de las 9

Una de las tradiciones más importantes de la capital cubana es el Cañonazo de las 9 de la noche. Este hecho ha perdurado desde el siglo XIX y ha tenido diferentes significados. En sus inicios les anunciaba a los habitantes que era la hora de cerrar la ciudad. Desde hace varios años indica las 9 de la noche y es un acontecimiento que, muchas veces indica el inicio de una actividad cultural.
La guía del tour nos explicó este particular y nos llevó al lugar donde se realiza esta ceremonia que constituye uno de los actos más representativos de la ciudad y el país.

El Faro de la Habana

Nunca había tenido la posibilidad de subir a este lugar que en su momento fue el punto más alto de la ciudad.
Es cierto que pude llegar a la cima, pero, fue todo un reto, para este cuerpo que esta edad ha dejado de hacer ejercicios físicos. Llegué muy cansado y sudando, pero valió la pena porque las vistas de la ciudad de la Habana que se observan desde la altura son bellísimas.

En espera de bajar para el lugar donde almorzaríamos y descansando del ejercicio que fue subir a la cima del faro me dediqué a tirar algunas fotos de la Habana. Confieso que son mucho más lindas que las que aquí les muestro. En estas imágenes se ve la bahía, el Morro y otras construcciones de la capital cubana.

El almuerzo

Después de toda la actividad terminamos con un almuerzo muy cubano y amenizado con, Parranda, la nueva cerveza cubana.
La actividad sirvió para recibir el Premio de la Academia de Ciencias de Cuba a uno de nuestros investigadores y a la directora general.

Un comentario final

Fue una velada extraordinaria, en la que me divertí aprendiendo que es de las cosas que más valoro y admiro.
Sigo cumpliendo sueños y alcanzando sueños. Ojalá la salud me alcance para seguir logrando metas y consumando proyectos.
