A Tribute to a Life Well-Lived: Celebrating a Devoted Christian's Final Journey

In life, there are moments of joy and moments of sorrow, yet within these experiences lies a deeper sense of unity. Recently, I had the privilege of joining colleagues from the Lagos State Teaching Service Commission in celebrating the life of one of our director’s father, a man whose life was marked by faith, devotion, and resilience. Passing at the age of 104, he had lived a long, fruitful life dedicated to God and his family, leaving behind a legacy that speaks volumes of his character. His burial ceremony was held in Ilora, a serene town in Oyo State.

The journey to Ilora was both a journey of reflection and a reminder of how far we go to honor those we care about. We left Lagos around noon, hoping to arrive in time for the wake-keep later in the day. The drive took us about four and a half hours, a trip that allowed us to bond over memories and stories, reminding ourselves that life is about supporting one another through both joyous and trying times. We arrived just in time, gathering with other family members, friends, and well-wishers to share in the solemn atmosphere of remembrance and love.

The late father of our director was known for his deep devotion to Christianity. As an Anglican, he was a steadfast believer, attending church regularly and living by the principles of his faith. His life revolved around worship and service, and he was an inspiring example of humility and dedication to those who knew him. A man who prayed, supported, and encouraged others, he had lived his life by the tenets of Christianity, constantly striving to bring out the best in those around him. Celebrating such a life is both an honor and a lesson for those of us left behind. We are reminded of what it means to live a life filled with purpose and to leave a legacy that others can look up to.

On the day of the burial, the ceremony began with a church service. The Anglican community gathered to bid him farewell, celebrating his unwavering faith. Hymns were sung, prayers were offered, and family members shared heartfelt words of gratitude and love. The priest spoke about his life, describing him as a man who had served not only his family but also his community with unwavering commitment. His long life was a testament to his faith, resilience, and the strength he drew from his beliefs. In moments like these, it becomes clear that age is not just a number but a reflection of years spent touching lives, sharing wisdom, and making a difference.

Following the church service, we moved on to the reception, where family, friends, and guests came together to celebrate his life. The mood was warm and filled with gratitude. The tables were set with traditional dishes, and there was plenty of food and drinks for everyone to enjoy. We dined and shared stories, celebrating the life of a man who, even in death, continued to bring people together. It was a joyous gathering, reminding us that in our culture, celebrating someone’s life often means sharing meals, laughter, and memories.
