ARJUNA TEMPLE - Enchantment in the Land of the Archipelago
Hi everyone ..
How are you?
I hope you are always healthy and happy!
My little story about a temple in my own country, Arjuna Temple which is very enchanting with a cool and pleasant garden expanse. A suitable place to gather with family, friends and couples.
Before becoming Indonesia, this country was inhabited by a kingdom. The same kingdom with the name of their respective regions. From the many kingdoms which finally formed a country called Nusantara. That's why Indonesia now has many unique and interesting tourist attractions left by ancient ancestors.
One of them is Arjuna Temple. This temple in Dieng, Wonosobo has a long historical story. This temple is one of the many temples located at an altitude of 2093 meters above sea level, which could make this temple the highest temple in Indonesia.
BRIEF HISTORY OF ARJUNA TEMPLE
This temple was built in the 8th century AD by the Sanjaya Dynasty from Ancient Mataram. Apart from Arjuna Temple, in this complex there are also several temples consisting of Semar Temple, Srikandi Temple, Puntadewa Temple and Sembadra Temple. Arjuna Temple is located in the north and the Arjuna Temple complex is one of the largest in Dieng. And like most temples in Dieng, the community names the temple after the Mahabarata puppet character.
This temple complex was first discovered by Dutch soldiers and when it was discovered, the complex was flooded with water. Until finally maintenance was carried out in 1856 by an Englishman.
AWESOME ATMOSPHERE
When I first entered the gate to the temple complex, I was presented with a road lined with shady trees on the left and right. The cool and cool air makes the complex the most popular tourist attraction for tourists. Not only foreign tourists but also local tourists. One of them was me, who was amazed by the shapes and ornaments of the temples in the Arjuna temple complex.
After passing through a road full of trees, I now arrived at a large field containing rows of temples surrounded by grass, which was comfortable to sit back while eating lunch and enjoying the amazing view of the temples.
WHAT IS INTERESTING ABOUT ARJUNA TEMPLE?
In this temple complex, a dreadlock hair cutting ceremony is always held for indigenous children of Dieng descent. It is said that they are obliged to cut their dreadlocks to avoid bad luck. This ceremony was held during the Dieng Kultur Festival. When the event took place, many tourists crowded the Arjuna temple complex.
The temples in this complex also look stunning, the architectural style is influenced by ancient Javanese culture. The ornament is like a ladder with a handle shaped like a pencil with a dragon's head at the end. Above the door there is also a kalamakara carving which is said to be able to ward off evil. This temple also has a pointed roof. But when I visited some had collapsed and were not in perfect shape.
The Arjuna Temple complex and especially Dieng are very closely related to Javanese wayang stories. Not Indian puppetry. There are several different stories from these two cultures. Not all of these four temple buildings have Arjuna's name. However, there are several other names such as Sembadra, Gatotkaca, Semar and Srikandhi.
Arjuna Temple has an area of around 36 square meters and there is a small tower at each corner of the temple. The height of this temple is approximately 1 meter. There is also the Srikandi Temple which stands majestically. The function of this temple is to worship the Trimurti (three gods), namely God Brahma, God Vishnu, and God Shiva according to Hindu beliefs. There is another Semar Temple which stands proudly next to Arjuna Temple. During the war of independence. This temple is used to store weapons and equipment for worship. Then Sembadra Temple, which has a height of approximately 0.5 meters.
There are no longer any statues in the building as seen in several temple buildings in this country. The statues were secured and stored safely at the kailasa museum.
HOW TO GET THERE
Because I previously stayed at an inn in Dieng, my friends and I rented a private car to go to Arjuna Temple. On the way we were treated to views of the plantations of local residents and it was very cool to the eyes. Our journey took approximately one hour from the accommodation.
For those of you who use public transportation, you can take the bus that goes to Wonosobo terminal then change buses to Dieng. The journey takes approximately 1-2 hours.
Because the location of Arjuna Temple is close to the Sikidang crater, the ticket price is combined by paying Rp. 15,000 / $1 to enter the temple premises.
Near here there are also many traders selling typical Dieng souvenirs to take home. And there are many typical Wonosobo foods that you can enjoy. Because we didn't have much time, we just played for a while and then went home.
