Sunday Foodies - Yum!

Lovely Sunday!

This weekend the weather was fa-bu-lous! Like one of these days that you look outside and think man, we freaking live here, can you believe it? We had a few weekends of less activity in terms of getting the house in order because sadly my boyfriend had some stomach issues these weekends and I could not get the deep cleaning done as much as I wanted to by myself. It's one of these things that you can't do much about but deal with them.

Crazy hours

My boyfriend worked crazy hours in the past weeks so he could surely use a little break and even though I'm on top of our spendings, he deserved a break too. I decided that I'd spend less on groceries this week by emptying the freezer and pantry and gave the go ahead to have a nice lunch in the harbour at our favourite Belgian restaurant. The ambiance is great, the view too and the food is not bad either.

Kasteelbier & Olives

My boyfriend is always happy to sit down here and have a dark "kasteelbier" from Belgium as it's one of his favourites. You can get all kinds of different beers from all over the world here but he really prefers this one over most others. It's not something we do often because there's a price to them but when we sit here, it's mandatory to have this beer, lol.

They usually don't have tapas here but this time they served some olives and as per new tradition since I moved back to Spain, I try them every time. I know many aren't to my liking, Chupadedos are my favourite and then we have those that I will eat but that I'm not too fond about. When I love them, I will just ask them which olives they serve so that I know which ones to look out for next time when I'm at the "fruteria".

I was surprised by his answer about these olives. He said "just standard green olives but with an anchovies juice", say what? Here I was thinking that I could skip ALL these options with anchovies because boy the Spanish seem to like them, sometimes half of the olive shelves are filled with some type of anchovies lol. It turns out that I have a new option to buy, damn, these were SO GOOD!

How people change

My boyfriend still has to laugh every single time when I say "are you going to eat these, otherwise you'll be too late I will eat them all as they're so good!". He likes to remind me and say "You mean these olives that you find so disgusting and hated al your life?" LOL. Now I seriously crave them sometimes. It's a good development to crave olives over sweet stuff, I'm happy I kept trying them.

Starter

Without a fryer at home and no desire to make our own "bitterballen" which you could call a little round croquette, we always have these for starters because all three of us like them. I eat them plain, so does our daughter but my boyfriend likes this mustard so he dips them in the mustard.

Hungry

As we had a table a little later than originally planned due to them being fully booked in the early afternoon, we were super hungry by the time we sat down. It didn't take long after finishing the few bitterballen before we knew what to order.

My boyfriend ordered this chicken "pinchos", in Holland we call it shashlik, I think it's the same in English? It was really nice and tender.. And came with some tiny salad and pepper cream sauce...

Salad for me

I decided to go for the goat cheese salad because it's not too expensive as well as a very well balanced salad which I truly love. The goat cheese slices are heated and come on a toast with some honey and it tastes delicious. I always try to ad a little piece of this to every bite to enjoy it to the max.

We ordered a bowl of fries on the side and our daughter wanted to have another round of bitterballen so we ordered one more as she didn't eat too much from my boyfriend's chicken and was going to be hungry otherwise, lol.

Frikandellen!

We tried ordering another Dutch/Belgian snack online before, namely "frikandellen" but every time I fail to do so because of at least 20 euros shipping costs (cool transport). I remembered that I heard someone ask this restaurant owner once where he buys his frikandellen and then he offered to sell him a box. I totally forgot about this but this time my boyfriend said listen, I want a frikandel but it's 3 euros for one eating it here, let's ask the guy what he charges for a box and take it home instead. Turns out this was a smart move!

I won't kiss and tell how much we paid for them but it was a good deal :)

So that was the end of our sunny Sunday with good food and company. How was yours?

That sure looks like a well-deserved dinner on your Sunday. Damn, the ΅Frikandellen" is something I know so well, and haven´t eaten since I started to eat vegetarian. For a while, we could buy Vegetarische Frikandellen bij Jumbo, but they removed it from their assortment. I still keep looking if I can find another good replacement as that is seriously the only thing I miss from time to time.

!PIMP your next Sunday too!

That is definitely looking awesome!
The last one would be a bit too much onion for me, but looks delicious as hell! :D

Haha, I love red onion, and it was well balanced, without the sauce it would definitely be too much for me too!
