If Something Sounds Too Good To Be True...

Browsing the market place

I recently found a whole world of coins to collect on the second hand marketplace where I sold a few things as well as bought some stuff. As I kept bumping into the fact that many silver I found online for a nice price came from the US and with high shipping fees OR no international shipping, I decided to try and find another way. I just typed in silver coin and voila, a whole world of coins appeared and there were even a few sellers with a nice collection that I bookmarked because their prices were quite reasonable, especially considering the fact that the shipping fees are low and have buyers protection.

Myths and legends koi and dragon

When I was happy to have found the missing piece from the Pert mint myths and legends collection, namely the dragon and koi, I decided to browse a little further to see which ones I'd mark as favourite to keep track of any price drops etc. It's always nice to do so because whenever the seller lowers a price, you get notified, which is convenient, especially considering the fact that I don't need to buy all these rounds right away but can browse a bit more and decide later which is my next purchase. If any of my favourites drops in price, I may pull the trigger.

What is that?

Suddenly I saw a 1 oz Silver bar for just 6 euros. I didn't really think it was real first but when I checked the seller, he had a bit of junk for sale only and I figured he may just not know what it's worth? Or maybe he just wants to get rid of it quickly? I also considered that he made a typo submitting the add and wanted to ask 16 or 26 euros and figured if I'd buy and pay it, he either sees it in time and cancels the buy, or tells me he made a mistake.. I figured it was worth the risk, especially considering the buyers protection which makes it possible to return an item without costs and refund is guaranteed if there's something not ok with the sale. I had nothing to lose, only to gain.

The title of the ad said it was silver

And so I took screenshots in case it was needed afterwards to prove to the marketplace that the seller sold it as silver while it was not. I just hoped it was a typo mistake but clearly in the back of my mind I figured it can't be real silver. Yet, there was a spark of hope haha. A girl can dream right?

I pulled the trigger and with the shipping and buyers protection the item cost me €10.28 total. Worth the risk and now it was time to wait.

Meanwhile

I chatted with some silver stackers in the discord and they know what's up and were unanimous that it must be some China rip off. I decided not to wait and just ask the seller are you sure it's silver? He immediately said it wasn't and that it could not be for that money. I told him you are deceiving people by not writing that in the title of the ad so you clearly hope someone falls for it.

He then edited the add and wrote that it's pure silver plated, lol. He cancelled the order while I already decided it's fine I will just give it to my daughter for fun, and wasn't going to send it back because I thought it would be nice to have one fake at home too, especially if I could get my hands around a real one of these in the future. Anyway, he did me a favour and cancelled it and told me he'd take my advice for next ads and write it clear in the title.

It could have been worse

There was a bit of excitement for a bit, even know you know better deep down, lol. And when I figured it was a fake, I already thought let's not go through the hassle of returning it and just use it for comparison. Now that he cancelled it, I will probably find myself another fake coin in the future, but then on purpose, lol.

Flea market finds

While having chats in the silver stackers discord, they told me to take a magnet if I go to the flea market so I can check things quickly. I never thought about that because when I go there I don't really aim on finding real silver rounds, I mostly just browse through the circulated coins if I see one that I like and just cost me a euro or so. That way I can never get scammed really as I consider these all part of a journey and to learn more on how to recognize certain things and what to pay close attention for. There's so much to learn that it's a small price to pay. I love to hold things in my hands rather than just browsing on the web, it's more interesting if you can hold it, isn't it?

Great post and way for people to easily spot those China fakes! It's nice to be able to see and feel something before you buy it. One huge disadvantage of online markets!

I hope at some point I can hold a fake one as well as real one of a certain coin or bar so I can feel the difference in my hands on the spot. But I don't think I'd take that kind of risk on a flea market or anything, it was the buyers protection that made me try it, lol. Otherwise I'd rather spent the 10 euros on something useful.

Be very careful buying bullion and coins. Buy from a reputable dealer or shop.

Yeah I get it but it was a no risk thing :) And there are some real shops on the platform but with the buyers protection from the platform plus low shipping fees. It's a better idea to buy through them because I now have had experiences with a refund as well as a package that was not delivered because of a mistake in the address, it went back to the seller and was shipped again for free. It's a really good system actually.

I think the platform is so much bigger than the sellers directly so they can offer a way better protection and customer service than dealing with some of them directly.

I do want to go into the big city soon though, to visit a few local sellers in person because on the flea market, there's one seller that seems to be a professional and I'd like to check his shop in person (I suspect he has on at least). The city is a nightmare in terms of parking though, so I keep postponing !LOL

But eventually, that's where I hope to get at, build a relationship with one of these in person.

As I mentioned, it was worth the few euros risk as I could have returned it and refund without any issues. If you make sure to take screenshots with proof of what the seller is saying he/she is selling, it's an easy refund. But of course I knew this was probably too good to be true (hence the screenshots lol).

There are a few reputable dealers on the platform so that's nice. And the waiting is not long either, compared to buying overseas :)

It looks like a good piece, the good thing is that you have the experience to buy this kind of thing even if it poses some risk of not being what you expect. There are many people who sell replicas or fake things.

I would like to take this opportunity to invite you to read the post about Inleo delegations.

There was no risk as the seller advertised it as silver, so I took screenshots because I knew I was probably going to need them.. they have a refund policy which I checked before the purchase..

Reading this reminds me of last Friday night. I ALMOST bought a Silver 1oz Maple, but I didn't because of the financial thing. Well, you know what I mean. After that I was looking at something else, and almost fell for the same trap, a silver-plated coin sold as silver for about 5 euros. I almost clicked buy but my partner was standing behind me and said, "This can't be true, you can throw away money in better ways".

Lol, I guess stacking isn't for me, not yet!

LOL, yeah you know if you're protected for the fakes it's not a true risk. But without that, I wouldn't have done it.

I mean the example on the flea markets, there can easily be tons of fake coins within these folders with coins and buckets to check hundreds of coins for a certain price, I'm not going to get anything expensive there for sure because I don't trust myself yet to be able to spot the obvious fake lol.

That's a wild ride! Finding a whole world of coins online and almost scoring a (fake) silver bar is certainly exciting, even if it didn't turn out as you had hoped.

It's great that you were careful and took screenshots, and even better that you contacted the silver stackers community for advice.
Indeed if you have buyer protection it was worth a try.

But it just goes to show that you have to listen to your gut feeling when something seems too good to be true.
Another valuable lesson learned.

I love your positive attitude!
Even if it was not real, it would indeed be a nice acquisition and a reminder of your adventure.
And who knows, maybe soon you'll find a real silver treasure at the flea market, magnet in hand! 😄
I know I have one in my bag the next time I visit a flea market hahaha.

Keep exploring, learning & have fun collecting!

P.s. Have you been collecting for a long time or just getting started?

The old Silver (plate) slight of eye or hand. I've seen those kinds of offers before and heard stories of those victims not paying close enough attention before committing. Better to safe than sorry.
