Miles Brundage, a former leader at OpenAI has recently left the company and he left with a strong message to everyone. He said no one including OpenAI, is ready for AGI (Artificial General Intelligence).
He warned everyone that although we see many companies racing to develop advanced AI, they seem to be overlooking most of the critical safety and readiness concerns regarding AGI. Brundage’s departure is showing a growing frustrations within the company. It's not just him, lots of people are leaving the company for similar reasons.
They feel the company is now more focused on making profits than safety of the technology they're working on. This is a bad perspective for a tech company this delicate to have.
Over the past few months, OpenAI has disbanded teams that were focused on AI safety like Brundage’s "AGI Readiness" group and also the "Superalignment" team. Very High-profile staff members including cofounder Ilya Sutskever, have also left the company and they're worried that OpenAI’s mission is being compromised by commercial pressures. Elon Musk filed a lawsuit against OpenAI for this exact reason and people didn't understand him then, now maybe seeing some workers leave from this reason, maybe attention will go there. I've seen that Elon musk was right all along.
Brundage believes OpenAI and others need independent voices to guide AI development very carefully. I don't think he has completely left the AI industry because OpenAI has offered to still support his future work.
