I think this might be the worst time to be on Mark Zuckerberg's shit list of you work at Meta because the company is doing another round of layoffs.
I previously made a post about Mark firing employees just because they abused the free food voucher but that's not the reason this time. This time it's about Efficiency.
I hate that word "efficient" in the corporate world because now it feels like a code word for "we over promised you and now you have to pay for it". These employees are not robots you can shutdown and discard anytime, they're real people who probably thought they'd be part of some grand vision and make name for themselves joining the company and sacrificing their lives.
Now they're getting fired just because Meta needs to look good on paper. It's not a good thing at all but there's a contradiction here. I'm upset when I think of it from the employee perspective but when I look at it from a management point of view, I understand why Mark Zuckerberg might be doing this.
Right now, companies like Meta are under enormous pressure to perform, to innovate and to maintain their growth after a few years of unprecedented highs. You could tell it's the same story for Apple right now and even Google too.
But it's still a very cold move to make on the employees. These are teams that were maybe about to build the next big social media experiences on WhatsApp and Instagram, teams that could’ve made great impact in the world for years to come are now being sidelined, reorganized and some layed off.
Meta said they want to align resources well and that makes it look like their decisions are a part of some genius long-term plan, but in reality what we have are people without a paycheck.
If you think the company is cutting back because they’re failing, you're deceived, they're still making massive profits. What's they're doing is looking at those employees as excess to shave off and hopefully keep their shareholders happy. That means loyalty to the workers is thrown out the window.
