Fight Fire With Fire - Mosquitoes With Mosquitoes!!!

I'm scared of snakes and I know you are too, I wouldn't want to end up alone in the middle of a jungle with a hungry lion.

Some young ladies say they'd rather be in the woods with a bear than a man and I say good luck with that. These animals are pretty dangerous and pretty lethal but the animal that poses the most lethal threat to humans is the mosquito.

If this fact shocked you, it's not ignorance, you just haven't paid attention to the math yet.

It is estimated that lions cause the death of about 250 humans per year while snakes kill about 100,000 humans per year.

Mosquitos are like "step aside let me show you how it's done" - The kill about 700,000 to 1 million people annually.

So yes, you might be scared of snakes, but those tiny mosquitoes with annoying sounds in your backyard pose a higher threat to you.

  • Coming from someone who got rushed to the hospital at midnight in 2022 due to savage level malaria, it's not an easy experience at all.

Mosquitos cause a whole lot of diseases because of the microorganisms and viruses they carry with them.

If you want my blood for reproduction just take it for free, why give me a virus while doing it? - That's what I always ask

Mosquitos cause diseases like malaria, dengue, West Nile, yellow fever, Zika and lymphatic filariasis to list a few.

The video below shows how these mosquitoes even affect babies in the womb and they come out with abnormally tiny heads caused by a virus called Zika virus spread by mosquitoes.

Scientists all around the world that are concerned about this issue have spent hours on end coming up with a solution or more like a weapon to combat these mosquitoes and they've found it.

Fight Mosquito With Mosquito

I've heard of fight fire with fire many times but I never thought the day would come where I see us fighting mosquitoes with mosquitoes. That's the solution to combat the mosquitoes.

You might ask, why not kill them all? - My response is there's 3200 species of them and only a small fraction of them are transmitting diseases to humans, so the ecological ramifications of killing all mosquitoes is still unknown to us. Plus is killing all of them really feasible? I don't think so.

Thankfully, the scientists have finally found a way to stop disease transmission from mosquitoes without having to kill them. How do they do it, well using a bacteria, pretty shocking right?

Source

Bacteria Is Saving You now?

It's pretty strange to hear that a bacteria is actually saving you from another disease but that's what's happening. The bacteria is called Wolbachia. They noticed that when we have this particular bacteria exist in the disease transmitting mosquitoes, the viruses in the mosquitoes couldn't grow or spread and why was that happening? Apparently Wolbachia outcompeted the spread of those viruses in the mosquitoes.

So the plan was simple, infusion of Wolbachia in some mosquitoes in the lab, produce more Wolbachia infected mosquitoes and spread them out into the community to go mate with other mosquitoes which of course includes the disease causing ones.

So if a Wolbachia infected male mates with a disease transmitting female, her eggs won't hatch.

However if a female already has Wolbachia and mates with a male well, they end up producing Wolbachia infected offsprings and Wolbachia stops the growth of pathogens or viruses in those mosquitoes.

The mosquitoes that are infused with Wolbachia in the labs are known as Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) mosquitoes. The ultimate aim is to reduce the number of disease-carrying mosquitos like dengue fever, zika virus and malaria amongst others. The scientists have actually seen success with this approach. They tested it not too long ago and realized that by using this method, the people in mosquito infested communities where 4 times less likely to be infected with diseases caused by mosquitoes.
However, this approach still has its shortcomings.

Unintended Consequences and Public Concern

One major worry is whether genetically modified mosquitoes, most especially males can still bite us. It kind of contradicts with some of the earlier assurances we were given about these insects being safe and non-aggressive.

The ecological consequences of these modified mosquitoes is still not known since we have not yet seen this on a larger scale but that's the point, to start small, see the effect of this before proceeding to more mosquito infested communities.

They Might Start Using Mosquitoes As Syringes

These mosquitoes have gotten the approval to be released in America, mate with other mosquitoes and kill the offsprings or suppress the growth of the pathogens in them but the interesting thing is that the lethality bacteria they put in the mosquito which is the Wolbachia actually doesn't kill all the mosquitoes. Some of the male mosquitoes keep living.

That means the GMO mosquitoes can bite humans. So what other plans do the scientists have for these GMO mosquitoes?

Well one plan is to use the mosquitoes for things like vaccinating people against their will. Yeah, it's going to be stupendously easy now. They just have to infuse the vaccine into the mosquitoes, release them, they bite you, you have been vaccinated, period. So in a way, the mosquitoes will be used as syringes to vaccinate people.

In September 2022, NPR declared that the researchers had successfully vaccinated people using these GMO mosquitoes. Check out the NPR blog below for more details.

A box of 200 mosquitoes did the vaccinating in this malaria trial. That's not a joke!

However the downside is if a vaccination can cause problems, you'll have those problems without your consent. Also, the evil geniuses can really weaponize this, it would be like dispatching millions of drones that instead of shooting bullets, they shoot any disease they like. That would certainly be a disaster.

The unfortunate part about this research and experiment is that there's really not enough transparency, nor have we addressed adequately which misuse might occur with its use. Yes it would be cool to see a world without diseases caused by mosquitoes but I hope we don't end up creating a bigger problem and a bigger weapon for crazy people.

  • What are your thoughts on this idea?

  • Would You Rather Just Stick to drugs, vaccinations by doctors, antibiotics and keeping your environment clean?

Thanks for the time, and as always I would love to get your feedback on the topic.

Wow did not knew mosquitos were a bigger cause of death then both snakes and lions combined this is huge stuff.

Absolutely brother, they cause more death to humans than any other animal alive. Tiny but the most deadly. I had to write this blog to create awareness because the scientists are testing the Genetically Modified mosquitoes I just hope it would be used for only good things. But regardless, please stay safe from these mosquitoes
