Episode 103: An ImmortalCreed Conversation

Welcome back to the People's Guild. In this one, we pull into the gaming studio over at @immortalcreed and sit down with Chris and Everett.

We talk through their game, Immortal Creed, as well as Hive, blockchain gaming, Splinterlands and the future of Web3.

Enjoy the show!

Immortal Creed's Game Development Journey

Chris and Everett from Immortal Creed's game development team, joined the People's Guild, where they shared their journey from high school music to game design. They discussed their shared passion for software development through game design, which began with creating a tile-based role-playing game before scaling it down to a team-based, turn-inspired game, 'Vd'. They also shared their fond memories of playing Bethesda's Arena and confirmed their intention to make it available for others to play. The team also discussed the evolution of technology's impact on game development, the challenges they faced transitioning from DOS to Windows, and Chris confirmed his interest in crypto and web 3 gaming, which began a few years ago.

Web-3 Gaming, Ownership, and Decentralization

Chris, Ev, and Hepthorn discussed the concept of ownership and decentralization in web-3 gaming, with a focus on the potential for community involvement in game development and the creation of decentralized marketplaces. They also explored the integration of blockchain and crypto, and the accessibility of games for players. Lastly, they delved into the strategies and progression of a specific card game, emphasizing the importance of understanding player interactions and countering opponent moves.

Exploring Web 3 Gaming and Immortal Creed

The team discussed their involvement in the Web 3 and blockchain gaming space, with Chris revealing a growing interest and acceptance in this sector, despite skepticism in the traditional game development world. Chris shared his experience with the game Splinterlands, highlighting its fast-paced nature, accessibility, and the potential for significant profits, inspiring ideas for their own game, Immortal Creed. The team also discussed the importance and challenges of supporting different platforms, with a focus on mobile and Apple products, and clarified the significant contributions each team member makes to the project, beyond just ideas.

AI-Based Games and Marketing Challenges

Chris, Hepthorn, Ev, and Bjangles discussed the development and marketing of blockchain-based games. Chris emphasized that he and his partner have created a functional game, which has gained significant adoption, mainly through Hive, and they are considering expanding its functionality to attract more players. The team discussed the challenges of marketing their blockchain-based game to a wider audience, including the stigma surrounding cryptocurrency and the infrastructure and maturity of web 3 games. They proposed strategies to reduce friction for users and gradually introduce them to the game's blockchain elements, as well as the idea of collaborating with other teams.

Splinterlands DEC Integration Proposal

Chris proposed a plan to enhance engagement with the Splinterlands community by offering 1,000 card packs for purchase with D@C. The packs would be burned, thereby reducing the supply and potentially boosting the DC's value. The team discussed the proposal, acknowledging that the Splinter Lands community already has access to the necessary APIs to integrate DC into their game. They agreed to proceed with the plan as a marketing initiative, with the potential for future, more significant integrations.

New Initiative and Polygon Integration

Chris proposed a new initiative to promote their presence using a proposal system, which he believed would also allow people to spend DC. The team agreed this was a good idea despite potential opposition, and decided to move forward with the plan. They also discussed bridging the gap between Hive and Polygon, with a focus on enabling Polygon functionality, and the availability of their NFT collections on Hive Engine and Polygon. The team confirmed that game packs were available both on Hive Engine and in-game.

Maintaining Objectivity in Game Development

Everett and Chris discussed their decision to maintain objectivity by not playing their game, Splinterlands, in order to maintain their perspective. They shared that they continue to learn about the game through observation and are considering incorporating role-playing game (RPG) elements into a card game, as well as a team-based game concept. They also discussed the potential of a guild system, known as factions, and the impact of other games, like Baldur's Gate and various tabletop board games, on their own development.

Game Strategy and Podcast Plans

They highlighted the game's accessibility, ease of play, and ongoing development plans based on player feedback. The group also engaged in a fictional discussion about a board game strategy and committed to forming a discord group chat for continued discussions. Lastly, they talked about their future podcast plans, including the possibility of playing a game of "Risk" or another strategy game, and appreciated the support and feedback from their listeners.
