Episode 102: A FatJimmy Conversation

Welcome back to the People's Guild. We roll into California for this one to sit down with a guest that recently earned himself a GF Hardy Stonefish in a TPG: Battle Royale! session & our good buddy, @Fatjimmy.

We talk proposals, the recent Splinterlands takeover of Twitter, gameplay, new game modes, soulbound cards and a slew of other topics.

Enjoy the show!

Discussing Proposals and Game Modes

FatJimmy, Bjangles, and Hepthorn discussed a range of topics including the practice of recording meetings, their personal experiences with homesteading, and the historical geography of the United States. They also talked about a proposal from Yaba to introduce a "pay to play" aspect in the wild, with players needing to purchase vouchers to play and earn in the wild. FatJimmy supported this idea, while Hepthorn expressed interest but wanted to see more details before making a commitment. The team also considered potential alternative game modes and the possibility of a free-to-play trial period for the game.

Tournament Plans, Community Engagement, and Proposals

The team discussed their plans for an upcoming tournament, with FatJimmy and Hepthorn sharing their strategies and past experiences. The conversation then shifted to their online community engagement, particularly on Twitter and Discord, and the importance of mutual respect and constructive discussions in these spaces. They also addressed the issue of proposals being squandered due to certain members' influence, comparing the process to a legislative system to ensure proposals have support. Finally, they discussed the soul-bound system's potential issues and suggested potential solutions to balance competitiveness and fairness.

Addressing Card Game Challenges and Solutions

FatJimmy and Hepthorn discussed the challenges and costs associated with playing at higher levels in their card game, including the arms race-like aspect and the issues with the current camping system. They also deliberated on potential solutions to these issues, such as introducing liquidity bots, allowing players to choose their league, and providing incentives for advancement. The high cost at the top level and the need for mass adoption were identified as key challenges, with suggestions for price tiers, natural progression, and the introduction of additional game modes to provide a fair playing ground for all players.

League Caps, Ranks, and Splinterlands Support

The discussion focused on the future of league caps and ranks, with FatJimmy expressing optimism about improving the current system. The team agreed that the game should offer a satisfying experience at all levels and discussed the need for financial support for Splinterlands. There was also speculation about the upcoming bull run and whether Matt would take action earlier to prevent dire circumstances. The team acknowledged the growing pains of the game and the limited resources available for the small team, but remained hopeful about the long-term potential of the game.

Pricing Strategy and Project Improvements

The team, consisting of FatJimmy, Bjangles, and Hepthorn, discussed the company's pricing strategy for their promotional cards, with a focus on the Henchling Enforcer and its perceived overpricing. They acknowledged the need for a balance between exclusive and accessible pricing, with the appeal of affordable packs and the potential for reselling being discussed. The team also discussed the ongoing improvements and updates to the project, with a focus on user experience, and the rapid implementation of suggested changes. Concerns were raised about the high cost of common cards and the potential for driving customers away, with suggestions for lowering the price to $2 being considered. The possibility of hiring Splinterlands to build future sets and the proposal of a Matt seminar were also discussed.

Addressing Matt's Role and Game Updates

The team discussed their concerns about the negative messages directed towards Matt, emphasizing his valuable role in the company and his preference to return to his original role in game design. They also highlighted the importance of focusing on the positive aspects and supporting Matt to prevent the downfall of their project. Additionally, they had a lively discussion about the newly introduced seminar, Lorkus, in their game, sharing strategies and experiences, and the potential need for a new ability to counter its massive life leach. Lastly, they discussed the ongoing evolution of the game, with a focus on the card named Blight, and the introduction of new tactics, which led to the creation of the land card.

Crafting System and Consumable Cards Discussion

FatJimmy suggested a community-based crafting system for items and spells in the game, where players could earn production points to level up and craft rarer items. Bjangles concurred, adding that different types of tokens could be used for different items and that similar ideas were being developed for the tactics system. The team also discussed the concept of consumable cards in the game, with FatJimmy supporting the idea and suggesting that permanent cards could be a better option. Lastly, the team reviewed the new game's artwork, with Hepthorn appreciating the refresh and the dark elements it adds to the game's atmosphere.

Improving Communication and Rewards Discussion

The team, including Bjangles, Hepthorn, and FatJimmy, discussed the need for improved communication and visibility in their project. They agreed on the importance of crediting each other for contributions and updating the team regularly. The team also discussed a shift in the format of their town hall meetings and the introduction of a monthly Q&A forum to improve communication with the community. Lastly, they deliberated on the delay of the rewards cards release and proposed a staggered release to keep the game interactive and exciting. The team also shared their experiences with the existing reward system and considered a proposal to increase unlocking, which was currently under review.

Team Strategy and Bot Management Discussion

Hepthorn, FatJimmy, and Bjangles discussed strategies for managing their team, focusing on creating a fair and engaging environment for all players. Bjangles proposed the introduction of a 'ghost card' to manage liquidity bots, and the concept of a dedicated 'villain' bot per account was also brought up. The team agreed to adjust glint rewards based on rating match-ups, adding a more dynamic element to the game. Additionally, the group shared personal experiences and stories, including FatJimmy's time as Phil Lesh's personal tech, and the group's admiration for his experiences.

Digital Art, Myers Sound System, and Untamed Cards

The team discussed their experiences with digital art installations and the Myers Constellation Sound System, with a focus on its functionality and possible evolution. They also explored the impact of the Covid-19 supply chain on FatJimmy's business, his work on improving a product based on musician feedback, and his experiences with unique amplifiers. Lastly, they delved into the world of "Untamed" cards, discussing their value, strategies for obtaining specific cards, and the potential for new game modes to increase the game's value.
