There's a need to manage a team. It reminded me some years ago, precisely 2017 after my graduation from Senior Secondary school. The fact that I'm from a family where we all need to work to eat, I thought to learn a skill and while I do that, I had the mindset to start a business.

I was watching a TV program when the idea popped up. It was an advert with a celebrity son used as the Model.

I felt the boy was lucky and that modelling in Nigeria isn't properly positioned.

How I wish the same opportunity this celebrity son has, every other models or upcoming folks with the nice body structure and face can get it.

Because of this, I decided I was going to start a modelling agency.

Okay ! The idea seems welcoming . I hand picked a few of my friends and started the entire process.

The #business crumbled in less than 5 months 🙄🙄 I didn't know we would stay that long. Here are the errors that came up.

✍️ I who is the team lead knows nothing about modelling.

⚡ One of the team player is an interior decorator, another was a guitarist and another was still a " Less professional Photographer".

My second business also went through that same tunnel.

I was walking by an hotel and I saw a few things that caught my attention, the first was that, I realized the hotels needed to take every customer to the rooms they want, show it to them first and if they love it, they can make payments afterwards.

To me, I find it stressful, so I thought for every problem is an opportunity to explore.

I decided I was going to start the business and solve the problem.

I made a physical product that captures every corner of the hotel and customers can check on their phone or on the Hotels screen the rooms they want and what size they want.

It's to make life easy.

Yes, I had the team and again things went wrong because I didn't have the right team.

My third business was nothing different.

It was a transportation business . Not to go full into details, a wrong team also fucked me up 😡😡😡

At first, getting your team right is like getting the business right.

Managing a team requires three major steps.

1. Having the right team

2. Tasking the team

3. Coordinating Results.

This is based on experience. I realized the first mission of any team manager is to access the information, skills, character and mindset of each team player.

It's important we get this right because it's the only way to have the right team.

At first, I got my team wrong ❌

If the first step which is getting the right team in place is wrong ❌ the other steps will automatically be wrong.

Are you hoping to build a startup and finding it difficult to select your team?

Well, based on experience through 4 different business, I believe the first 4 keywords you should take notes of are :

✅ What they know ( Information)

✅ Their mindset to the business and how they see life in general.

✅ The skill they have in place ( As much as mindset is right and information is right, without the skill, the business will break down in less than a month).

✅ Character ( I don't know if you see this as a criteria but you shouldn't miss out on it. A bad staff or team player is a bad fruit that should be taken out)

The mindset and information is there to ensure the skill is properly utilized, while the character is to ensure the brand identity isn't stained.
