Effects of Four Day Work Week - HiveLearners!

As an employee, I can relate to the feeling of having an extra day as a leave. In this current scenario, only a few international companies give Saturday and Sunday as leave. The best thing about these two-day leave is that one can plan for a trip by Friday night and return to work by Monday morning. I initially thought the same that 2 days' leave would give me an ample amount of time to stay with myself and my family. But often, a planned trip in between these two days feels a lot rushed and by the morning of Monday, I am not so in the mood to go office.

A day work week will leave me with 3 days to enjoy myself and follow my passion. I want to showcase how it will be a pro and con to me.

Pros -

  1. Extra time to follow the passion which will reduce the cases of moonshining that we see in jobs.
  2. Can help in career building as it will allow me to take up higher studies.
  3. Stops alienation towards family and friends as all the dynamics can be handled easily.
  4. Boosts extra-curricular activities.
  5. Breaks monotonous mindset.
  6. Can also boost the economics of the proprietor who carries occupations related to amusement and entertainment.
  7. Improves the health and output.
  8. Helps a person to reflect on his targets and commitments other than job-related.
  9. Helps in socialization and generates awareness about surroundings.

Cons

  1. Can affect the economic output of the company and country.
  2. Can lead to more consumption of services and less savings.
  3. Can boost frivolous expenses.
  4. Will allow to take two or more jobs which can negatively benefit to the person's well-being.
  5. Socialization and strong social bonds are subjective and not guaranteed as they change person by person.
  6. Leaves in essential services jobs can have negative cascading effects eg. waste collectors, groceries vendors, customer support, etc.

From my understanding pros outweigh the cons, 3 leaves a week may not be uniform across sectors but for people in essential service, limited work time or multiple shifts can allow them to catch up with their family and well-being.

At times, people may feel bored out of holidays and continue to work in the existing models. Because of this, an experience gap will emerge which will affect the promotion of the daily goers vs 4 days workers.

It may also lead to frequent job/role changes and can create a strive competition in the higher role occupations. People will be moving away from their sector and with studies/career upgradation can jump into other sectors creating a shortage of particular jobs. At the same time, the continuous change in roles can make a person jack of all cards but he/she/they won't be an Ace.

It will also lead to the creation of a pool of laborers who may not be able to realize their true potential and would be stuck in a particular salary band for too long because of the presence of multiple options for employers.

Despite, its negative cascading effect, four days a week can be tried to understand the changes that can come up in society and the profession. It will also be interesting to note how it will affect the professional relationships among the various countries that are either developing or developed.

That aspect of it consuming much with less savings is a good one, we spend more when we have less time to work.

I'm not sure if I'd want one more free work day but the Pros you mentioned are kinda worth it.

Having the weekend for yourself is very good, I like having these days off. But regarding the negative point about the economy, it might not affect it that much. While productivity in some sectors might decrease, on the other hand, the tourism industry could become more active, which helps maintain balance.

Yeah I believe the economic nature will compensate the negatives at the end of the day

It may also lead to frequent job/role changes and can create a strive competition in the higher role occupations.

I very much agree with you, in highly organized societies, competition is going to be savage, creating segregation and a fairly large social bias. Competition is good, but at this level I am sure it will not end in anything good, but rather in conflicts and social outbreaks.

It will also lead to the creation of a pool of laborers who may not be able to realize their true potential and would be stuck in a particular salary band

And not only get stuck on one salary, but even worse, get stuck doing that same type of job for the rest of your life, because there are no other types of jobs available, because those who already have the highest roles, do not. They are going to leave and they are not going to allow them to leave power. An authoritarian dictatorship will be created in this regard, and we already know that these dictatorial/authoritarian models do not prosper, history has shown it (and continues to demonstrate it, if not look at the case of Venezuela and its dictator Maduro).

I think that the approach that companies should give to work should be different, based on results and not on time worked, perhaps this way things would go better and in this way the essential sectors that provide services all the time, would not stop being abandoned. because having a correct rotating system of people who deal with tasks for short periods of time, the service would continue to function, people would have enough time to do their things and the company/service would continue to be effective and I dare say that even more efficient.

Indeed, a new look with a new mindset towards how the professional cycle exists must be taken. With everything progressing why let this be sitting and dusting?

A new approach is necessary, taking advantage of AI and having them work for us, because that is the idea, a more efficient and transhumanist society. At least I aspire to such a future.

I think we should all work five days a week because if we get too many days off it will make us very lazy and then we won't want to go back to work and the company will also suffer that way. Due to the loss because the company has invested crores of rupees.
