The Silver Stay Puft Marshmallow Man

Back in 1984 I can still remember seeing the first Ghostbusters movie in the theatre when I was a young kid. . It starred comedy greats like Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Rick Moranis, and Harold Ramis. It was such a well done movie even with the limits on technology available in the mid 1980's Then the second movie came along and it really wasn't all that good and the franchise vanished for decades. Harold Ramis died in 2014 essentially ending all hope of a reunion and return of the franchise. Bill Murray wanted nothing to do with the movies until he had a cameo in Afterlife in 2021. Fortunately Ghostbusters: Afterlife resurrected the franchise, and it was a pretty good movie to boot!

I haven't seen the newest movie released yet, but I'll probably watch Frozen Empire when it comes out for free streaming.

Yesterday I was browsing through Apmex.com looking for some new interesting silver or gold products that have become available. I have a habit of checking out the commemorative coins from the nation of Niue because they produce some of the most interesting coins you could ever imagine. Today I had planned on sharing something I picked up locally until I saw this. It was just weird and cool enough that I had to share it. Say hello to the $5 Stay Puft Marshmallow Man!

About the coin:

This is a two ounce solid .999 silver $5 coin from the island nation of Niue. It comes in it's own presentation case in the form of a ghost trap. I kind of wish they had made a non colored version with just silver art, it would have really awesome! They limited mintage to 750 and have just recently gone on sale on Apmex.com for $199. To be honest that's a little more than I would want to pay, but if the franchise continues on for years to come this might become a valuable item. I don't think I'll likely buy one because I have things much higher on my wish list, but this is pretty cool!

I think had they used Slimer the coin could have been really nice. Imagine this guy on a silver non colorized coin with a clear pigment on the ghost and surrounding him that glows in the dark. Now that I don't know if I could resist, but somehow I don't think my opinion is likely to affect their decision making process!

Someone’s got a lot of imagination!☺️
Does this come with a ghost trap box as well?
I wouldn’t mind having one of these in our stack, but for a $199 OUCH!🙄
I guess a throwback to the 90s or 80s always draws peoples hearts and attention!😊

I love it. For its time, "Ghostbusters" featured impressive special effects. The visual portrayal of ghosts, particularly the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, was groundbreaking and remains iconic. The proton packs and ghost traps added a unique element to the film's action scenes.

Just a note, it won't let me edit in Leo right now, but photos came from Apmex.com and the table from Numista.com

Just too expensive for what it is, I agree. But if it was one of the Slimer non colored but glowed in the dark like I mentioned, I would pony up the $200!

I remember the cartoon and the movie. I think I didn't see the movie until later though. I might have been too young when it actually came out. It might have been 80s R which was more like PG-13. Although 80s PG wasnt far off from R back then either!

I'm a little older than you are, it was a PG 13! The ratings system was a little more lenient in those days depending on who you were buddies with I'm sure!

Entertaining franchise on the most part but when I think of the Horror-comedy a little more different than the mainstream style. Still in the ballpark of Gothic styled stacking but at $200 it won't be. 👻

The original was meant to be a horror movie with funny actors. I think they tried going back to that with the new movies but without Murray and Aykroyd it's hard to pull off. At $200 this is too rich for my blood, but if I found it for around $100 on the secondary market I might pull the trigger.

I would love to see an actual ghost of the coin that glowed in the dark, then it would be a little more Gothic for you!

I was not even born when the movie came. I watched the movie in 98 I guess when I was kid lol. It was indeed a lot better movie than modern ghostbusters series.

It's because I'm old! lol

The original was by far the best and had the best cast. The new one's at least picked up Paul Rudd and cameos of what's left or the original cast. It's too bad they can't get Rick Moranis out of retirement, he is so funny!

It was a great movie right along with Back to the Future. The 80's just had some great movies and TV shows that they keep copying until this day!

I gotta admit, having it come in a little version of the ghost trap is a stroke of brilliance! TBH, I want that more than the coin. 😆 Very, very cool, though. Now I need to look into Niue. I don't know how I missed it when I was a kid collecting world stamps and currency, so I need to learn about it...
