Silver Un Peso from Chile/ Re-blog lottery for a chance to win 3 HSBI!

I have been collecting coins from South America for years now. There are so many different countries with beautiful coinage. One of my favorite places on the planet to visit is the country of Chile. I spent a fair amount of time living and working there and it's a great place to visit. It's a very long country west of the Andes Mountains stretching from Peru down to the Arctic circle. In the north there is the Atacama desert which is the driest desert on earth to the south in Punta Arenas there are glaciers and you can even see wild penguins. The people are nice and the food is great.

While living there I picked up some nice silver souvenirs while I was there like I do most places I have visited or lived. Santiago is the capital of the nation and where I have spent most of my time down there. The mint in Santiago was established in 1743 under orders of the Spanish King Ferdinand VI and was taken over by the Chilean government once independence was won. Today's coin was struck in 1879 and it's a nice one, I picked it up in a coin shop in Santiago several years ago.

About the coin:
Country: Chile
Denomination: Un Peso
Mintage: 780,000
Mint: Casa de Monedas de Chile, Santiago
Composition: 90% silver
Weight: 25 grams
Diameter: 37 mm
Edge: Reeded
Demonetized: Yes
Obverse: Andean condor with shield with lettering POR LA RAZON O LA FUERZA (by reason or by force)
Reverse: Escucheon above laurel wreath with Ostrich feathers with lettering REPUBLICA DE CHILE UN PESO (Republic of Chile one Peso)

I really love this coin, it's in great condition although the strike of the coin was a little weak as seen below the condor. The Andean condor is so well detailed and designed, a great coin. At ninety percent silver and twenty-five grams weight it some nice heft to it. These tend to be a little on the expensive side in good condition but great for coin collecting. A little on the pricey side for just stacking though.

If you are interested I included a map of Chile and a picture (not mine though) from one of my favorite places in the nation. The Torres del Paine National Park is an amazing place to visit, not too far from Punta Arenas. There are beautiful Andean mountains and lakes, even glaciers. Well worth the long trip, but remember that winter there is opposite of ours in the northern hemisphere. July and August are usually a very cold time to visit and I wouldn't recommend it!

Thanks for taking time to stop by and read my post. If you have comments or questions please feel free to leave them below!

Really amazing to see all of these examples of coinage minted around the world, and how those nations chose to use precious metals.

That's what I love about international coins, so many to choose from! Chile is a country with lots of copper, silver, and gold deposits so they are one of the more stable countries in South America.

Not sure I would have wanted to live in those times, but they sure made some nice coins!

Very impressive Mountains my friend!😊
Sounds like Chile has four seasons like we do!😊
Beautiful 1879 Un Peso, it has that very detailed “old coin” look!🤗

The Andes are really pretty mountains! Those old coins had great artistry, something we don't see much today ☹️

True……I don’t know why the coins of today just do not have that artist touch ?🤔
I guess that’s why I gravitate more towards Morgan dollars, mercury dimes etc……..
Just like your coins from Chili ……
Very classy !🤗

Early Republic coins are getting expensive only to be out priced more by the colonial coins, so many coins on my wish lists and not enough cash.

Yes they certainly are, these particular coins have really shot up in price the last several years. I'm the same, the wish list always outpaced the funds available for investment!

The coin is of course beautiful. I just wrote somewhere that I have no silver and gold from Latin America.

That I won was the first news I read today. The day starts well. I hope my luck lasts until the evening.

Hi! Didn't go online much this weekend, came home late on Friday after having date night with my boyfriend. We had a bbq on the beach, some tapas elsewhere, ice cream and a cocktail. Most of all, good company :)

Lazy Saturday, chill Sunday, went for a swim yesterday, sea was wild lol..

How was yours?

Glad you had a nice weekend. Sounds like you had some fun and your daughter must have loved it. The good company is always a huge plus! I took it easy for the most part trying to catch up on a few writing projects. Arthritis has finally subsided so I was able to get some exercise, overall not a bad weekend!

I wish I could have gone to the beach. I'll do that when I get back to California. I'm still working out of state at the moment on contract work, but being my own boss I can do things on my schedule and don't have to go into the office too often!

I'm out of PIMP at the moment but have decided to push towards 10K more aggressively than I have been. Thank you for the PIMP!

Ah that's a smart move, I will keep boosting your comments and posts :)
Here's a !PIMP for this one to help you towards your goal ..

Good to read that it's going a bit better in terms of the arthritis. And even had some exercise nice! Hopefully, it stays this way and gets even better!

Yeah we had a good weekend, I mean, it started well on Friday evening, Saturday was really slow and lazy but that's the other side of being out late lol. We had to keep our promise to go to the beach so we went on Sunday. I personally loved it more the first time with the chill waves, last two times it was rocky as can be. But a few meters in and it gets better. At least we weren't inside, lol.

Have a great day!

Thanks I appreciate it! I'm getting around today much better so I'm tapering off the dreaded prednisone!

I'm glad it was a nice weekend for you guys. And it's so true, it is really nice to get outside and enjoy the outdoors. Especially if it's the beach!

Have a great day too!

I've never seen that coin design before, very handsome. Reminds me of old US currency.

Great design isn't it? Thanks! A lot of the South American coins from that era seem to have taken inspiration from the US.
