Silver American Eagle from 1993! / Re-blog lottery

The year was 1993, I had recently returned back to the US after living in South America. Things were definitely different than I had remembered. There were new road, new buildings, and of the course the old old familiar ones that haven't probably changed in fifty years. One new thing that was close by was a new coin shop. Having always been a bit of a coin nerd I had to go check it out.

One item caught my eye right away, the American Silver Eagle. Although they had been produced since 1986 I hadn't really paid attention to them. I may have been too distracted by girls at the time.... funny how that happens to teenage boys...but that's a subject for another day! But back to the story, I decided to pick one up. At the time they only came in tubes straight from the mint and they would take the top one out and give it to you if you asked to purchase one. I asked the fellow at the counter if I could take and look at all of them in the tube and pick out the nicest one. He said normally no, but since his boss wasn't there he let me do it anyway.

This is the one I picked out of the bunch, not a perfect specimen but pretty close! I have been hooked on collecting them ever since. They were based off of the Walking Liberty half dollar US coin produced from 1916-1947 which in my personal opinion was one the prettiest coins the US ever produced.

As you can see just a beautiful bullion coin, which is why they are highly sought after by both coin collectors as well as by #silvergoldstackers. The cost of the coin over the silver cost is called the "premium" and can be rather high at times especially when silver is in high demand like it has bee for the past few years.

I personally think precious metals are always a smart investment. No matter what happens in this crazy world of ours they will always have value. And it seems that as of late the crazy is just getting worse at a faster pace...
