Silver 5 Lirot coin from Israel/ Re-blog lottery for a chance to win 3 HSBI!

When I was in my twenties and early thirties I traveled as much as I could afford, so I got to see a lot of the world. It was a lot of fun and I'm grateful that I made the time to do it. Today I have a kind of a cool coin that I picked up on a trip to Israel. I had always wanted to visit for all the historical sites, and I'm kind of an amateur wanna be archeologist after watching "Raiders Of The Lost Ark" one too many times. It's such a interesting place to visit and it's one location very worth the trip. I was even lucky enough to go inside the Dome of the Rock mosque which was awesome, but I understand now that non Muslims aren't allowed to enter. So I was very lucky in my timing!

This coin I picked up at a shop in Jerusalem mainly because of it's date of minting, being 1972. It just happened to be my year of birth as well. Let's skip the old man jokes... It's a cool looking coin, with lettering in Hebrew, Arabic, and some English. It was meant as a commemorative coin so it was never circulated but was already a little tarnished when I found it. It was the only one they had so I picked it up, a nice silver souvenir.

s-l1600__79_-removebg-preview.png

About the coin:
Country: Israel
Denomination: 5 Lirot
Year: 5733 (1972)
Mint: Jeruselem
Composition: Silver 75%
Weight: 20 grams
Diameter: 34 mm
Thickness: 3 mm
Edge: Reeded
Demonetized: Yes
Designer: Nathan Karp
Obverse: Hanukka Lamp from Russia supported by stylized lions
Reverse: Denomination with script in English, Hebrew, and Arabic which characters I can't seem to use here but here is the translation from Numista: 24 YEARS TO THE STATE OF ISRAEL. 1972. ISRAEL 5 LIROT ISRAEL

Sorry on the translation, I don't speak Hebrew or Arabic so I had to use the translation on Numista. This was my favorite coin I picked up on that trip. The one thing I got burned on though is it's 75% silver, the shop owner told me it was 90%. Oh well, when in a tourist trap never expect the truth... That's my quick Sunday post, feel free to leave any questions or comments below and thanks for stopping by!

Thanks a heap man! Interesting to see the different silver compositions depending on age/location. Would be a neat line of study to trace it back and see why they chose to use that % in their currencies.

Most places liked 80 to 90 percent silver with copper to add some resistance against wear. I'm not sure why they went with 75 on this one, some of their older commemoratives were 90 percent. There is lots of history in every country behind their coins. Your welcome by the way and thanks for the re-blog!

Nice pickup. When I was in Israel I never had a chance to pick up any of their coinage or take in sites, it was all training. I guess I could have tried to exchange some with one of the Israeli soldiers, but never thought of it at the time. I did get to travel to the Tel Aviv airport from Haifa port to drop someone off...at night, but that is about all the site seeing I got in.

Airport to training... sound about right for military life. I went on my own dime so I had plenty of time to see the sight. It's a cool place. I was never there in a military capacity so I never so any of their bases or exchanges. They might have had some cool stuff! Too bad you couldn't see the sites though, that sucks.

Well, the ship we were on ported in Haifa. One of my buddies had to fly back home for a family emergency, so we toook him to the Tel Aviv airport. I was never on any of their bases, we went straight to the desert training areas from port and then back.

If I ever visit Israel, I'd be visiting the coin shops for sure! A 75% silver Israeli coin, simply amazing.

I was even lucky enough to go inside the Dome of the Rock mosque which was awesome

That's pretty amazing!

That was a really cool experience, so many thousands of years of history all took place at that one location. It was amazing!

I only found one coin shop when I was there, the hotel gave me directions. I'm sure the guy at the hotel probably gets paid to send people to the shop as it was his only recommendation!

I was still happy with it! What do you expect? Not to be taken advantage of as a tourist? It's a cool coin and it's still silver!

Very impressive, glad you were able to go through this before they shut this down to two non-Muslims!😊

Yeah…. Did you know that the word Palestine 🇵🇸 is Greek for “One who wrestles” … it is literally a Greek Translation of the original ancient Hebrew Word “Israel “ 🇮🇱 …. One who wrestles with God.

I can read Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek and I seem to be the only person on Earth who knows this…

They are fighting themselves. Kind of stupid if you ask me.

🇵🇸 = 🇮🇱

That's an amazing skill set you got there, I can only do English and Spanish... I agree the whole thing there is pretty stupid.

How did you pick up Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek? That's an impressive trio!

Well, I am also very interested in Archaeology and Ancient History and languages … growing up Catholic I was always interested in the original Source of everything we were being taught … and the deeper I went the more I realized that in order to understand anything that Jesus was teaching I needed to go back to Hebrew and then further back to Aramaic and Canaanite and the Phoenician Aleph Bet …

There are many secrets within the original Proto-Hebrew letters that are actually pictographs … similar to Egyptian hieroglyphics… each of the 22 letters of the proto-Hebrew Aleph bet has an ancient Symbollic meaning… it is only in understanding the symbolism of each letter that any of the Bible makes sense.

I will share more of these secrets if you are interested but they are suppressed and censored in the world. They will also be censored (downvoted) here on Hive. These are ancient mysteries that the Evil Powers of the world want to keep hidden.

That's interesting, and I agree to understand the true history you need to go to the original texts which were principally in Aramaic if I recall correctly.
