My Silver Christmas Wish List Day 4 / Re-blog lottery!

World War I had finally come to an end in 1918. As a celebration of the war's end the US mint was ordered to produce silver dollars once again by the Pittman Act. Initially they started with the Morgan dollars in 1921 until the a new design was chosen. A competition was held to decide the design and a committee unanimously chose the work of Anthony de Francisci, who based the design on his wife Theresa. The Peace dollar was born and went into production in the end of 1921.

After that brief introduction let's get back to the wish list. The wish list challenge is to share twelve items from your Christmas wish list, started by @silverd510 . Now for my twelve days of Christmas silver wish list continues at day 4 with a beauty from 1921, a Peace dollar graded by PCGS to be MS66 high relief. Have a look:

images from eBay.com

About the coin:

Designer: Anthony de Francisci
Model used for the coin: Teresa de Francisci
Denomination: one US dollar
Mint: Philadelphia
Composition: 90% silver/ 10% copper
Weight: 26.73 grams
Total sliver: 0.77344 troy oz
Diameter: 38.1 mm
Thickness: 2.4 mm
Edge: reeded
Mintage: 1,006,473 (all in the high relief)

The coin was designed to be high relief (meaning that the images stand out higher, not flat like most coins today), but the dies used to produce the coins weren't lasting very long because of the raised details. So they were changed to a flatter image the next year's coin so the dies would last longer. This made the 1921 Peace dollar a big collector's item because it was only produced in the high relief form. One interesting fact is that before the flatter dies came out in 1922 they did produce 35,000 high relief coins as well, and they are very expensive if you ever find one!

This coin is one of those high relief coins, and it's a stunner. It's a beautiful coin and for a mere $9,000 it can be yours! Since that's a little outside my price range it goes on the wish list! It's a gorgeous coin. Someday I'll pick up a nice 1921 Peace dollar, just not this year!

For those interested in what de Fracisci's wife Theresa looked like, here's an image from Wikipedia. You really can see her how her picture profile is on the coin!

A very pretty woman!

Peace dollars are a great series to collect because they weren't produced for very long and many were minted in most years. The one hard one to find are the high relief varieties from 1921 and 1922. I know @coinjoe was looking for a 1921 to finish up his collection, any luck coinjoe?

That's my post for the day, I hope you found it interesting. As always I'm always open to suggestions on ways to improve my post, so feel free to opine! If you have any questions or comments please feel free to leave them below. Thanks for all of your kind support everyone!

P.S. @stekene won the guess the coin grade contest from the last post and I sent him off his HSBI unit!

And my disclaimer:
Gold and silver stacking can be a fun hobby but isn't for everyone. You can lose money. I'm not a financial advisor and this isn't financial advice, please always do your own research before spending your hard earned money.

Oh my God you always have some phenomenal silver content! Absolutely reblogging your content!

So is it one entry per account minus any bots? And does a dog qualify as a separate entry or is he excluded?

Kind of teasing kind of wondering... Lol!

Wow, finding the high relief version would be a epic winfall. I think a story went around a few banks that complained that these HR dollars didn't stack right for counting purposes like the usual dollars... 😬 'cringe' If they only knew.

Imagine finding something like this on a flea market lol. I mean, it's possible reading that story about the gold coin behind the other one hidden. Although rare nowadays, I would assume.

Thanks for another educational piece!

How is your weekend so far?

Not too bad, just cleaning and doing laundry, all of those fun things in life! You never can tell what you will find, it's all a matter of luck and experience! How's you're weekend going?

Oh man I should have done laundry today but I thought oh well I'll do it tomorrow instead. Only to find out my bf wants to drive to the second flea market we went to last Sunday .. meaning I will not be home until somewhere afternoon and that's when drying laundry is not ideal anymore (need to take advantage of the sunny hours, lol)..

But today was a lazy day, I'm now quickly going to write a Saturday post and call it a day because alarm goes at 7 again.

Wish me luck for a good find of something something :)
