My Nineties Friday Edition Week 9 with The Matrix

avatar
(Edited)

It's Friday at last, TGIF! That means it's time for a new edition of #NinetiesFriday , where you can share just about anything from the 1990's. It can be clothes, music, movies, TV shows, pictures, and the only limits are your imagination. Just want to say thanks to @geneeverett for starting and continuing to sponsor the event. Each week a winner will be chosen randomly and you can win six HSBI, three from Gene and three from me!

Every week I tend to make something different just to keep things fresh. I thought I might start out today with some classic movies from the decade. When you think of movies from the 90's the first one that always comes to mind is Pulp Fiction, which I already shared a couple weeks back. So I'll dive into some different timeless creations today.

First up I would be remiss if I didn't include The Matrix...

The Matrix

scriptgodsmustdie.com

This was released in 1999 starring Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, and Carrie-Ann Moss creating a whole new cinematic universe. Machines have enslaved humanity as uses them as batteries while placing their minds in the Matrix which they perceive to be reality. Neo (played by Reeves) is freed from the Matrix to fight the machines. If you haven't yet seen it yet I would highly recommend it!

Terminator 2: Judgement Day

fanpop.com

James Cameron produced and directed this second chapter to the franchise. It starred Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton and Robert Patrick, here the machines have become self aware in the future and send a time travelling terminator to destroy their enemy John Connor in the present. This was an amazingly well done movie and a must see if you haven't seen it yet. It's this series that makes so many people afraid of AI, because they don't really understand what AI is.... Great entertainment though that helped define the decade with a song written by Guns N' Roses that's hard to forget.

Office Space

cracked.com

If you haven't seen this go find it on streaming, it's a classic comedy about the torture of working in an office or in the food industry. It's about a trio of office workers that band together to get revenge on the company they work for, and it's hilarious. Starring Jennifer Aniston, Ron Livingston, and Stephen Root, it's one of the best films produced in the 1990's. If you've seen it you'll remember the TPS reports!

Since I'm a member of the #silvergoldstackers I just wanted to share a beautiful l item I found the other day on Apmex.com. It's a really nice coin featuring "The Matrix" from the island nation of Niue. This is 2 ounces of .999 fine silver that is antiqued, just a work of art... They only made 500 of these and they come with a numbered edge indicating which of the 500 it is. I would love to buy this, but its price is too rich for my blood. Asking price is $289.99 on Apmex, maybe if I can get a deal later on the secondary market...

Apmex.com

Now let's move onto some tunes from the nineties!

Guns N' Roses

wallpapercave.com

How could I share Terminator 2 without including this band in the playlist? Guns N' Roses formed in 1985 by a merger of the two bands; the L.A. Guns and Hollywood Rose in Los Angeles, California. They were destined for greatness with their catchy tunes and absolute disaster as they soon grew to hate one another and all had massive drug use problems. But included on the album "Use Your Illusion 2" was the hit song "You Could Be Mine", one of their great songs.

Foo Fighters

getty images

Formed in 1994 by Dave Grohl, in Seattle ,Washington, they have become of the most famous bands in the world since releasing their self titled first album in 1995. One of the first hits from the record was a great song "I'll Stick Around", the video was directed by Jerry Casale who is a member of the group Devo. You can see his influence the the white clothing!

And all of you that have seen my Friday edition know that I like to include one or two songs from the 1990's in Spanish. I spent most of the nineties living in Spanish speaking countries, so I missed much of the music scene in the US and had to catch up later.

Shakira

pinterest.com

Shakira is one of the greatest Latin American singer/songwriters of all time. She released her fourth album in 1998 entitled "Dónde Están los Ladrones?" (Where are the robbers?) She was already a huge star in Latin American music from her previous work, but this album launched her toward the English speaking world. As you can see in the picture included she is much younger and much less blonde back in the 90's (I think she looked better as a brunette personally.) In this song she embraced the part of her heritage from Lebanon, although she is Colombian. This is "Ojos Así" (Eyes Like Yours):

And an edition recommended by my good friend @geneeverett , a fun song from the move Office Space!

What an awesome post! The 90’s was a great decade. I was in high school for the first half of the 90’s and I remember the Chicago Bulls being huge around that time. Being in Australia, pre-internet, we only got an hour of NBA a week on television. It was Saturday morning at about 8:00am and was called ‘NBA Hoops’. We’d often have sleepovers at a mate’s place and all get up early to try and catch a glimpse of the Bulls and Jordan in action. We were always really disappointed if there wasn’t at least one Bull’s play in the top ten plays of the week segment!

Thanks! Of course I was a Utah fan, but Jordan was one amazing player! Have you watched any NBA this year? I really haven't... How's your son doing?

I’ve watched a bit, but I find that I watch more of Australia’s national comp now - the NBL. I taught someone who plays for one of the teams and just find it a bit more relatable, plus it’s finally of a calibre that’s almost on par with the MBA now (still way smaller, though). My son likes the NBA, so I watch a bit with him, and still enjoy it. I lost contact with the NBA after I left school, and all of those really good 90’s players were no longer there when I reconnected.

My son’s doing well - always has something going on. He just had his annual heart check up and everything was looking good there, but he has been put on preventative medication, but we were expecting that, so it wasn’t a surprise, at least. I’ve been away from here for a bit; busy organising an awareness raising event that I’m running in September. Hopefully we’ll be able to educate people on DMD and also raise some funds to donate to a local primary school so they can build an accessible playground. Thanks for asking about him - I appreciate that.

Now I have two awesome movies to watch!😊
Spending the 90’s in a sleepy Mountain town where the local movie theater didn’t cater to top name movies, we need to check out both the Matrix and terminator 2 😊
I think the silver round looks very impressive, but unfortunately $289 is also impressive Lol!😳

It is expensive, but a nice coin. That's one that might actually appreciate over the years. If you like comedy Office Space is really a good movie too, one of the top movies of the decade. How's the weather treating you tonight?

Nothing but sunshine so nice!🤗

That's a cool story! I don't remember when I bought my first player, probably 2001 or 2002 if I had to guess... Damn I'm getting old!

Let´s Make The 90s Great Again!
Loved how you just threw in everything and let it come together like a great 90s stew it was only lacking !PIZZA

Thanks! I just had an interesting thought, in the 90's I didn't eat much pizza, the places I lived didn't have pizza joints. Latin America didn't have a lot of pizza places back then, I only had it when I visited back home here in the US!

I preferred Shawarma personally so I didn´t have too much pizza as in the Netherlands they often offer both

She had such amazing music in the 90's, and she was much prettier as a brunette! She is my favorite female Latin American artist from the era. I really stopped listening to her new music after 2005.

How is your day going?

When I was kid I literally got no clue what matrix was and all that but as I learned more about VR worldover the years it made sense. Some really good scifi world through this.

It was a landmark movie in a lot of ways, and a lot of scifi has been generated from their ideas. I know you were probably really young when it came out, I'm a little older than you!
