Finding LEGO Gold in the Thrift Store

avatar

Can you find actual LEGO gold in a thrift store? Yes, I did a whole post about it sometime back, I'll add the link at the end of this post. Many LEGO characters and bricks have been made of precious metals over the years and come up for sale here and there. The gold I'm talking about today is turning those second hand LEGO's from thrift stores into cold hard cash, it's really an easy thing to do! But first let's talk about the ultra rare LEGO mini-figure that all collectors can only dream of....

In 2007 to celebrate 30 years of Star Wars the LEGO Corporation announced they would produce something so rare that only five were to be made. They were given out to five lucky contest winners. This was the 14K solid gold C-3PO.

So few of these are out there that they rarely have come up for sale, and are valued in excess of $200,000. I was not one of the lucky winners... This was the contest teaser I guess in the LEGO Magazine, which I have never subscribed too and thus never even heard about the contest until in was long over. That probably explains why I wasn't one of the lucky winners, you can't win if you don't enter...

This is what the actual prize looked like, taken by one of the winners.

It also came with a nice certificate of authenticity.

So if weren't a lucky winner you probably won't be able to get one as they rarely come up for sale. The other issue being I don't have $200,000 available to spend on a solid gold LEGO mini-figure. I might have to start playing the meme coin lotteries to score that kind of cash. I heard about one lucky investor who bought into Shiba Inu a couple days after it was first released, buying $17 worth. He cashed out to the tune of $1.4 million, I just need to find a meme like that one early enough! lol

Moving on to my LEGO's that I've been sorting through. I mentioned that I had picked up a bunch of LEGO's in a couple bins from a Goodwill in Orange County, California for $80 in my last LEGO post. I haven't had time to get very far as of yet, but I am working my way through little by little. Today I thought I would share some of the fun stuff I had found so far.

These are a few I pulled out recently, some are popular well known characters and others special editions, and a couple that came from uncommon sets. First off let's start with Thor, God of Thunder:

Fortunately I found the accessories he came with, most importantly the hammer and the clear base, I guess to make him look like he's flying. I can probably get $6 out of it, so not too bad at all!

This one is pretty cool mainly because he's an obscure Star Wars figure and relatively uncommon. His name is Hondo Ohnaka. I can probably get at least $20 on this one!

One of many different Superman mini-figures they've made over the years. I should probably be able to get $8 which isn't too bad!

Another obscure Star Wars figure that turns out is a Jedi and there was a green light saber that came with him. It took a lot of digging to find it though! lol His name is Quinlan Vos and I should be able to get around $20 for this one. I love Star Wars LEGO's!

This was from Series 8, a thespian actor. Unfortunately he is missing the white neck ruffle. I'll have to research how much they cost to decide if it's worth ordering. Complete they go for about $15.

A snowboarder from the Series 5 mini-figure collection. He's worth at least $15. The older mini-figures tend to carry more demand because they aren't as many out there.

This is from Series 16, a kickboxer girl and I might get $6, I've had quite a few of this one before. They aren't uncommon but they are cool.

So not a bad little haul, I still have a lot of digging to do to get all the mini-figures sorted out first. Some come with a set and at times if the set is complete they can fetch over $100. We shall see when I get that far along. In the meanwhile, I will probably take some better pictures with better lighting to get these ready to sell. With just the small percentage of items that I've sorted so far I have more than made back my $80 initial investment. Everything else from here on is pure profit.

Old LEGO's can be more valuable than their weight in gold, I guess that wouldn't be hard to do since they weigh almost nothing, just some very expensive plastic. So next time you're at a thrift store don't forget to check the toy section, you never know what kind of surprises await you there! Of course, most trips are a bust but every now and again you get lucky!

Thanks for stopping by and I hope you enjoyed my post. I really appreciate all of you support, it is truly appreciated. If you have any questions or comments please feel free to leave them below. Have a great week everyone!

I should try to piece together some of my old figures as well. I really don't think I have anything that valuable though. Most of my stuff are the old generic characters. I don't think I have any specialty pieces. I always get in on Meme tokens too late as well. When they are at the first pump I throw in like $25 to $50 and then I am usually left holding the bag...

You have to be in at the very start on those meme coins, which is hard because there are so many new ones all the time it's hard to keep up... I haven't played any in awhile now just for that reason.

If you still have the instructions with a set number it's easy to search the set on eBay to see what they go for these days. Sometimes you can be pleasantly surprised!

I think I have most of my instructions in a binder somewhere, but most of them have been torn apart and don't flow together much anymore. I will have to check though. Yeah, that's the problem with meme's I guess. When you start hearing about them it is too late.

I often see big bags of Lego at the thrift shops. Maybe I need to pay attention to them. I dont know what I'm looking for though... cheers @thebighigg

It's hard to go wrong with big franchise items, Star Wars, Superheroes, Harry Potter, etc. But sometimes the most valuable ones aren't famous characters, but obscure ones. It's a learning process like anything else, but after awhile you can tell what has potential and what is junk.

Even if you end up with less valuable stuff it can be used as parts in other sets at times. When I get those disappointing ones I see them as parts to add value to something else in the future.

Gotta find the lego seller here, so that I can make macro photos out of them.
The gold lego is way too expensive. :)

That gold C-3PO is an expensive collectible for sure. Only five in the whole world... Newer sets aren't all that expensive and if you find them used even cheaper. I only buy used ones these days, best chance of making a profit!

Wow only five minted in solid Gold!😊
I can see why they are worth over $200,000 apiece …… extremely rare!
Wouldn’t you love to put one of these in your stack? 😇

That would be very cool, and since it's LEGO brand it's only going to appreciate in value as the years go on. In another 20 years I would be shocked if it isn't closer to one million a piece...

Lego helps children develop their imagination and intelligence. It is one of those games that never goes out of style and even adults enjoy it. This one represents me.
I wish you a happy day.

Skiing is a lot of fun! I never got the hang of snowboarding quite as well, but these days I don't do much skiing. The knees no longer like it!
