Northern Beer Saturday with bonus beer batter!
Hello Hello Hivians, I hope you are thirsty?
Today is Saturday June 24th and the birthday of @pinkchic do go wish her happy birthday on her post Happy Birthday, Self!. It is also the birthday of my late father and he did love a dark beer!
So, this is a post for #beersaturday coming appropriately enough from Orkney, which are islands off the North of Scotland and where I bought my very first beer in a public bar whilst at school.
I tell you what though, the prices ain't half changed!
I remember when a fiver bought you three pints, now it does not buy 1!!!
We had been doing some sight seeing on the way down to the Hope on South Ronaldsay.
It is the southern most island that is joined by the last Churchill Barrier and I knew it was the home island of our AirBnB host.
We ended up in The Murray Arms for a pint and a bite to eat.
The screenshot from my pinmapple page shows how far north we were ...
The drinks were ordered, I knew what I wanted.
A glass of tap water and a coke for Mrs T. The water in Scotland is great, there is no need to order a bottle of water.
For me it was not a pint of Caledonian Best..
It was a dark beer though as you can tell, the dark gives it away.
The pint in question was a pint of Dark Island.
Over the years, I have drunk my fair share of it...
Dark Island is an iconic beer from The Orkney Brewery Unfortunately they are a bit out of the way on the West side of The Mainland near Skara Brae the 5000 year old settlement.
So what the fluff does it taste like?
Let's see what the brewery itself says ...
Chocolatey: Rich: Delicious
Dark Island is an iconic beer. A gold standard-bearer for crafted premium Scottish Ales. It almost needs no introduction.
It offers ripe, fruity and roast coffee aromas with flavours of dark chocolate, dates and nuts, from the combination of roasted malts and robust hops.
ABV 4.6 %
IBU 19
HOPS First Gold: East Kent Goldings
MALT Pale: Crystal: Chocolate: Malted Wheat
Interestingly they rate it a 3 on the bitter-to-sweet scale.
I like it, and that is what matters!
What did we eat I hear you ask!
Well as we are talking about beer for beer Saturday, of course we had the Orkney beer battered fish and chips...
Fluffing delicious it was!
We ate inside as it was a roasting day and there were no tables left that had any shade.
We got home later, and it transpired that the pub is owned by our host's niece!
It was well worth a visit, and they have totally revamped the bar and restaurant. The food is local seafood mainly and it is good. As it should be as the owners family also owns two fishing and two scallop boats!
This is my post for #beersaturday and The #BeerSaturday Challenge - Week 312 from @detlev in The BEER community.
Have you got a cheeky beer this week @coquicoin @lhes ...
Thanks for visiting and enjoy the rest of your day!

I wonder what that beer tastes like... Not really into liquors hehe .. I'll just get some of your fries haha..
hehe well it is tasty on a hot day, quenches your thirst.
The chips were excellent and some of the best I have had for a long time. Surprisingly there were a lot more in that little basket than I thought!
Lovely post and what a cool location.
Thanks it was :)
If that's how good a beer taste here, I'll be drinking it more often. The beer here is bitter, dunno the word that can describe it exactly but I really can't take its taste. My stomach gets easily upset after drinking a bottle. Yikes. Haha!
Ah well, some beers can be like that. Here I remember people starting to drink beer, light beer like lager would be a dash of lime in it to taste nice so they could drink!
It looked really delicious too! Especially those chips!😩 And you still drink beer...👀. I thought old men don't drink beer? Lol.
Best chips I have had for years, they had the skins on too!
Cheeky arse, actually that was the only one all holiday.
$PIZZA slices delivered:

Looks delicious except for the peas. Blech. I don't really care for them! The beer looks like just my style! I love a good dark beer. Usually more during the colder months, but not always!
A pint of dark would go down well with freshly caught fish, lovely island life, enjoy your stay, I'm envious!
