Nature vs Nurture: The Factors Shaping Our Identity

You may be aware that in some families, all of the children become lawyers as a result of their parents' professions, while in another family, a child from the genuine ghetto, whose parents are illiterate, rises to the position of attorney.

For the first child, it might be the parents' influence, but for the second child, what helped mold him into the person he is today?

This raises the question: What genuinely molds us into who we become—nature or nurture?

Nature is our DNA, and we are all aware of the significant influence that genetics has on our personalities, beliefs, and behaviors.

whereas our environment shapes us. the events we go through, the people we connect with, and the places we reside.

There are numerous examples of which (nature or nurture) having a greater impact on a person.

For instance, academic achievement. Even though Tayo comes from a family of professors and doesn't live with his parents, he is a person who is not book smart and is only interested in music. Because others in his family were not like that, he is the black sheep of the family.

And then there's Idowu, whose father was illiterate and couldn't even form or pronounce proper sentences, but against all the difficulties and odds, Idowu persisted in going to school and excelled in his class.

These two people's environments had a significant influence on who they finally became.

They didn't exactly turn out like their parents, despite the fact that their parents' blood was running through them.

So personally, I think that what we end up being depends on the circumstances we find ourselves in, the people we interact with, the things we fill our minds with, and the things we immerse ourselves in.

Take your self for example. What do you believe or think has molded you into the person you are now?

Is it your surroundings or your genes? Please let me know in the comments.

This is indeed a great question and a lot of things mold us into what we have become today. I think the two factors you mentioned here have a role to place.

A lot of things combine as the result of what we are today. These things involve the challenges we face in life, mindset, environment, and lots more so it is best to say we are both products of nature and nurture since the presence of both is the key.

Hmm. True. It’s the combination of both thathat shapes us. From the experiences and comments it’s not just one thing that moulds us into what we become

A lot of factors are responsible for what we become, for someone like me circumstances are what made me who I am today, growing up in a local environment with no one to help from anywhere, I knew I had to double my effort in whatever I do inorder to succeed in life. My parents were not educated, knowing where I came from alone is enough motivation for me to keep pushing for the best.

Hmm so motivating and inspiring. You didn’t let your background shape you but motivate you to do better.

Smiles.. there are situations where we don't need anyone to tell us, if we don't stand for ourselves, we may be doomed...
