Book review: stereotype issues addressed
Reading a book authored by the African feminist writer Chimamanda Adichie just made me feel my year is beginning right because the stereotype the society has thrown at us on gender related issues actually did call for questioning and somehow this author seems to tackle those questions each of us must have asked ourselves once in a while.
This book though with just 25 pages contains suggestions on how a girl child should be groomed. Not in the way of the society but in the way that seems right to the parent and in a way that'll favor the girl child not in a way the society says i.e there's the stereotype that women are supposed to be caregivers, cooks, home builders etc. This book questions and also answers why women alone should go through all that just because society says so.
Initially the book was a letter the author wrote to her friend who had reached out to her for advice on how to groom her little girl a feminist and after the letter she figured it was good if every woman out there could also read and get insight so she did some touches to the original work and published it.
Each suggestion actually went down well with me and this book indeed is mind blowing, just a few pages but I felt transformed.
Here in Africa, women are made to see marriage as an achievement, they are made to foresee getting married from a tender age and at the end of the day, if they don't, the society blames them and accuses them of being wayward, living immoral lives which made the so called "ideal men" refuse to have them as wives which of course sucks.
Adichie's book, though written for a black woman in the form of a letter, can be read by many as it deals with how to tackle societal norms concerning women.
It's really educational and mind blowing. It makes anyone see gender from a different perspective. A book that could change one's thinking, transporting a person to the world of light and understanding when it comes to the affairs of gender equality.
