A Son's Affection
"Daddy, why is mommy not the one preparing me for school today?" Tony suddenly asked his father. His eyes glistened with tears and fixed at the door. He had thrown a series of glances at it in anticipation that his mother would walk in and bathe him instead of his dad.
Tony was just four and had newly begun school. He was a very energetic and smart child who preferred his mother's attention to his dad's. Many parent and child games had been played to see who really Tony loved to spend time with but at the end of it all, it was obvious as he kept choosing his mom over and over.
"Errm, your mother is not strong enough today. She needs her rest" his father responded calmly. He actually expected the boy to ask after his mother. "But I want her" the tears that were packed in his eyes finally dropped freely on his cheeks as the words escaped his lips. "Oh dear, you know your mother needs a lot of energy to be able to compete with your energy, huh? He tried tickling the child who pulled away as he tried to wipe the tears off his cheeks "Don't worry she'd be with you this evening, just let me this once, please?" his father pleaded and he nodded reluctantly.
When he was done dressing up, he dashed out of his room to his mom's and climbed on her bed. "Hi mommy!" his tears touched her cheeks as he bent over her face and she opened her eyes. "Why are you crying?" She pulled him into her embrace and stroked his hair. "Am I the one that made you sick?" He stuttered. "Oh no, darling, not you, I'm just very weak and needed a little rest that's why your dad had to prepare you today". She kept stroking his hair and he closed his eyes and crossed his little hand over her waist.
Few minutes after enjoying his mother's embrace, he jerked up, placed his hands on her head and whispered prayers. "I love you Mommy. You'll be strong, okay?" He concluded and then planted a tender kiss close to her lips.
"Where did you learn that?" His mother asked, her voice trembling as she got really emotional following the act of her four year old. "My teacher told us to always pray for our loved ones when they're in distress" he climbed off the bed and waved his mother goodbye because his dad beckoned him over to have breakfast before the school bus arrived.
"I love you too, son!" Natalie muttered affectionately. That act of his sent strength to her veins. She was so surprised seeing her four year old act so mature then a smile curved on her lips.
Before Tony was back from school, his mom, Natalie, had made his favorite dish. She wanted to surprise him. She was feeling a lot better and waiting patiently for the bus to drop him off.
Just on time, the school bus swerved in and Tony jumped off enthusiastically when he saw his mother who had opened her arms to welcome him. He ran into her embrace and she raised him in the air, spinning and kissing his puffy cheeks. "Mommy, are you strong now?" "More than ever," she exclaimed and put him down then did a twirl for him which made him blush as he ran inside the house and crashed on the couch covering his face with his little palms. There was nothing sweeter to Natalie than seeing her son happy.
