Shadows of the Yokai (original mystery plot)

(Edited)

I have always been interested in Yokai. There are a lot of anime that I enjoyed watching like Gegege no Kitarou, Natsume Yuujinchou, Mononoke, and so on. And because of this fascination, I decided to use them in my plot for Wild Plot Wednesday 22.

I drew this a couple of years back... I think kappa(s) are interesting!

SHADOWS of the YOKAI

In a world where humans and yokai coexist, equality remains a distant dream. Humans, dominant in number, often harbor deep-seated biases against yokai.

When Kappajiro, a young kappa, was playing by the river with his father, they stumbled upon a mysterious bag being dumped into the water. Driven by curiosity, they pulled it to the surface, only to discover a lifeless body inside. Despite their efforts to save the person, it was too late. They reported the incident to the authorities, but instead of investigating, Kappajiro's father was wrongfully accused of murder. The assumption was that kappa, known for their water-dwelling nature, were responsible.

It was a sinister setup orchestrated by a secret anti-yokai association. Devastated by the loss of his father and the injustice, Kappajiro fled to the mountains, seeking solace in isolation.

Living in the mountains, Kappajiro couldn't ignore the news of fellow yokai being unjustly persecuted. He knew that while some yokai had ill intentions, many were being framed to justify their eradication.

Determined to uncover the truth, Kappajiro teamed up with his friends: Tenguko, a wise tengu, and Noh, a mysterious noppera-bo. Together, they vowed to solve each mystery, expose the real culprits behind the wrongful accusations, and clear the names of the yokai who were wrongfully persecuted for them... including his father.

As a fan of true crime documentaries, I'm aware of some cases when people were wrongfully accused due to biases and perhaps corruption. Some vile and cruel people in the world are even scarier than the ghosts and monsters we read in stories or see in movies.

When my younger cousins or friends tell me they're scared of ghosts, I always tell them that some people are scarier. Ghosts (although I believe in their existence) won't hurt us unless we disturb them, but humans? HAH! (Not everyone, though... but it doesn't hurt to be extra careful)...

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed my plot! Thanks for reading and see you around! (^^,)/

Reading this article reminded me that my son believed kappa were real creatures until he was around 7 or 8 years old. As you said, humans are indeed scarier than ghosts or monsters!

I really find Japanese yokai fascinating. :) One of my students told me about Tono City in Iwate which has some kappa-related legends. ^^ Thanks for dropping by! :)

It's my cute version of kappa... This isn't an anime, though... But who knows, it might be one someday? Haha 😆

I love how you have mixed elements of Japanese mythology with such a relevant topic as injustice and prejudice. I look forward to seeing more about your project!

Honestly, I don't know the character or the series he's from. xD.
But I really liked your drawing. I can tell at a glance that you have talent.
Surely, it must have taken you some time to paint that.

It's my original plot and characters, so it makes sense you don't know them... hahaha
Would you watch something like it?

Glad you like my drawing, though... ✨😎

I'm sorry, I'm just used to see in this community posts about series I don't know xD
Now that I see it, your drawing reminded me of a letter from Yu Gi Oh. jaja

I share a very similar interest/deep fear for the paranormal. But also interest in yokai! I think I discovered the idea of the kappa long ago through interpretations of them in American media interestingly enough! This is a great idea! It is so clever, for a while I forgot what I was reading and thought this was a 'real' anime/manga! Good luck with the project!

Paranormals are both scary and interesting, but there's something really enticing about them that we tend to just swallow our fears to satiate our curiosity... 😅

Waaa... I'm so happy to read such a feedback... It's just a plot for now, but I think developing it into a story would be great. I appreciate it... 😁✨

All this reminds me of the very first time I saw the Japanese film, Spirited Away as a little kid! The curiosity of what are all those other spirits who also need to bathe themselves? But also not wanting to actually be seen by them, let alone find myself face to face with those yokai!
Very popular film, and judging by your love of this subject, I'm sure you've seen it or heard of it! (They are all good films though)

Spirited Away was the first Ghibli movie I've ever watched when I was a kid. :) And I have to agree... perhaps, I didn't care much about the "funny-looking monsters" back then, but I'm able to appreciate the film more after watching it as an adult. :)

If you're interested in yokai, I recommend you watch the "Mononoke series". There was a new Mononoke movie released on Netflix last year, too. ^^ The art style is similar to ukiyo-e which is one of its interesting points. :D

It's always a pleasure... Would you watch an anime with this kind of plot? 😅

Absolutely!!! I think seeing the kappa trying to do justice until he gets it would be very satisfying. These are the kind of fights that are born out of frustration and helplessness and are without a doubt the most dangerous for the aggressors.

Right??? Kappajiro won't only be a water guardian, but a protector of all the yokai community alongside Noh and Tenguko. They might even meet other friends along the way... 😎✨
