I also don't really know how giving an English title works, but the English title of Tenki no Ko somehow makes sense. "Weathering" means braving out or enduring and the characters have endured not only the crazy weather, but also other issues in their life together. :)

And yes, Makoto Shinkai often has a theme in his movies... For instance "5cm per second" (Love against distance), "Garden of Words" (Love against age difference), "Your Name" (love against destiny) and so on...
