The Cape Canal Railway Bridge

The Cape Canal Railway Bridge

Now that I finally shared my Wednesday walk in Buzzards Bay Park, I can share the photos I took of a couple of bridges I saw while walking along by the canal

Starting with the Cape Canal Railway bridge

I was there from the blue hour through sunrise, but the sunrise was in the opposite direction from the bridge, I will have to find a spot when I can view this bridge with the sunrise in the background or go there for sunrise I guess

A little about the bridge
source

The Cape Cod Canal Railroad Bridge (also known as the Buzzards Bay Railroad Bridge), a vertical lift bridge in Bourne, Massachusetts near Buzzards Bay, carries railroad traffic across the Cape Cod Canal, connecting Cape Cod with the mainland.

The bridge was constructed beginning in 1933 by the Public Works Administration from a design by firms Parsons, Klapp, Brinckerhoff, and Douglas as well as Mead and White (both of New York), for the United States Army Corps of Engineers, which operates both the bridge and the canal.

The bridge has a 544-foot (166 m) main span, with a 135-foot (41 m) clearance when raised, uses 1,100-short-ton (1,000 t) counterweights on each end, and opened on December 29, 1935. The bridge replaced a bascule bridge that had been built in 1910.

At the time of its completion, it was the longest vertical lift span in the world.[4] It is now the second longest lift bridge in the United States, the longest being the Arthur Kill Vertical Lift Bridge between New Jersey and Staten Island, New York.

Wow, that is pretty impressive. I can't imagine a train suddenly having to stop because a boat is coming that needs to get through. I guess in that case they would most likely make the boat stop so the train can get by. I used to live in a town that has four draw bridges. It's always a hot mess. The running joke is you are either going to get stopped by a train or a boat on your way to anywhere in that town!

I think there is only like one train a day that goes on this route, so the bridge is lowered for the train and most boaties know the timings from what I have read

What an interesting structure. I can't recall ever seeing a singular lift in a bridge. The ones I've seen have two sections that raise up. I bet it's quite spectacle to see raise and lower. If I ever get back that way I'll have to visit it.

I would love to se eit being lowered some day apparently theres only one train that goes that route so I should be able to find out the timings

Woahoo!!! This is amazingly beautiful! I love the bridge firstly but seeing that sky view I just couldn't get enough looking at it.

It's always a great shot from you especially when there is a sky view, it makes it even lovely to behold 😍.

This is the case when everything is very beautiful and impressive. A giant bridge with an interesting history, the color of the sky and the surface of the water, it's really fabulous. There is no point in talking about the photographs themselves, they are always of excellent quality and made with love. Thank you very much.

Fun bridge and bridge facts. There is a short bridge like this between Oakland and Alameda Island in the San Francisco area. I always liked it.
