Tabor Boy
Tabor Boy
Recently after an early morning sunrise walk, I swung by East Beach to get some more steps in before heading home and I was glad I did as I happened to see this ship the SSV Tabor Boy

the SSV Tabor Boy is a unique educational asset of the Fort Tabor Academy. The Tabor Boy is a ninety-two foot, gaff-rigged, two-masted schooner that has been a part of the school since 1954. SSV stands for “Sailing School Vessel” and is the U.S. Coast Guard’s designation for the schooner. She is one of two Coast Guard inspected vessels in her class that operate in the northeastern United States. Tabor Boy is inspected and constructed as suitable for off-shore, open ocean passage making.
each fall and spring the schooner is used as a sail training vessel. The crew is comprised of twenty-two students under the leadership of Captain Jay Amster and a student executive officer (XO). Team-building and character-building are hallmarks of the program in addition to sail training and seamanship. During the summer the schooner takes groups of 12-15 incoming Tabor students on one of six, week-long cruises off the coast of Massachusetts, combining an ocean ecology and sail-training curriculum.
I first saw in from a distance as this next shot shows

So of course I had to take a stroll to get a closer view of it, of course I would love to have seen it sailing with the sails up but that was not meant to be

Cool ship! The educational aspect reminds me of the Kalmar Nyckel here in Delaware, whose mission is also education.
It's a little disappointing that the sails weren't up. I know that the Coast Guard will insist that the ship have a diesel engine as well (which on the Kalmar Nyckel is called the D-sail) so they can definitely be mobile without the sails.
That is a very nice ship! We don't usually see vessels like that except during the tall ships celebration they have each year down on the river. Beautiful shots! How cool that you got to see it out on the water!
I love old ships like this sometime I would to go to one of those tall ship celebrations
Excellent shots were very cool

If I ever get a chance to go to the sea shore, I too would like to capture such a boat in my camera.

.Gorgeous ship 🙂 although the motor launches hanging on both sides kinda ruin the look haha Make the students row to shore 💪
Yeah I thought the same about the motor launch really takes away from the old time feel
