Palmers Island

Palmers Island

Good Morning and I hope all is well with you

For todays post I am goign to share a few shots of and on Palmers Island here In New Bedford

I havent visited it for a while but it is a spot I do like checking out, this first shot is as I am walking alongside the Hurricane Barrier wall out to the island
From this angle it looks like the Island is connected to the walkway, but that all depends on the tide, at low tide one can walk out without getting ones feet wet, but at normal or high tide you have to wade through some water to get to the island which in the warmer months I do not micd, but no so much over winter

Located in the Acushnet River at the entrance to New Bedford Harbor, this 6-acre island is designated for walking and other passive recreational uses, such as bird watching, and I often see people walking by or out to and around the island

Palmer’s Island has an interesting history
Pre-dating the Pilgrims’ arrival in Plymouth by 18 years, English explorer Bartholomew Gosnold first surveyed the 6-acre island during his exploration of New Bedford Harbor in 1602. The island was later named after William Palmer, an original settler of Old Dartmouth. The island was used as an internment camp for Native Americans during King Phillip’s War (1675-1676) and as a garrison during the Revolutionary War. A hotel and amusement park were built during the 19th century. During the 1938 Hurricane all the structures on the island were washed away with the exception of the lighthouse.

As you cross to the island, you see this roped path up the rocks to the highest point of the island not that high but a cool view from there

Walking on an island isn't something so easy, I remembered when I tried it, I was so tired to the core. This island looks very beautiful, it's as if I am seeing it live.

Nice photos 👍 interesting history of Palmers Island. I'm always fascinated by places like this that have largely returned to nature. So much history but no traces of its past left behind.

Six acres is pretty decent, but when you look at it from a distance it doesn't seem like it would be able to have all that stuff on it that you said. I guess maybe it's just the rockiness that makes me think that.

The bright greenery looks attractive surrounded by sand and stones.

You just answer my first two questions, connected to land? does water covers it? was my first thought when saw the pictures, small island close to land are always cool to camp during night, been surrounded by water and close to the ocean keeps you cool, sometimes chill at night I guess, like the pictures, lots of green ✌️
