Market Friday: The Old Soviet Gastronome
These changes did not happen too quickly or too noticeably. There was a shock period in the beginning, but then everything went pretty smoothly. There used to be a store with a traditional assortment, and then suddenly it closed, and something else came along after the renovation. The general focus usually remained similar. Instead of a grocery store, there might be vegetable counters, instead of a fabric store, a ready-to-wear store... in general, it's pretty much the same as it was. But not quite.
If you look around once and compare the big picture, you realize that there are almost no old stores left. The stores you used to go to when you were a kid with your parents. Or the stores you first went alone on your mother's orders, clutching a paper bill in the palm of your hand. Or the ones where you and your classmates used to buy lemonade and candy.
It was one of those old stores. It wasn't in the part of town where I lived, so I rarely went there. But still, sometimes I would stop in to get something good if I was in the neighborhood on business. I used to buy shortbread cookies here - very tasty, with natural butter, pastries for tea, and sometimes something else.
The grocery store at the corner of Nekrasov and Mayakovsky Streets began operating in the 1920s, and over the hundred years of its existence it has become a familiar part of the city environment. But last spring the media published articles stating that it was going to be closed. After several articles it seemed as if the decision to close was reversed, and the store continued its work. But this extra period of work did not last long. A few months later, the store management still made the final announcement of closure. After the renovation, a standard supermarket appeared in that place.
I went to this grocery store before it closed specifically to take pictures as a memento. After the renovation part of the old interior was preserved. I haven't gone in yet to check it out, but I read the reports on social media. The chandeliers remained in place, and the flooring was also preserved. But the tall wooden counters were gone along with the general atmosphere of the old grocery store. Although, I think if you add a little imagination, you can still imagine what this store looked like not so long ago.

The store looks so beautiful.
Thank you very much!
You are welcome.
I see that you were missing some thing in the old times about the place for after the closure it has become a standard supermarket. You know, I could always relate to this my friend, most especially when I come back to the place where I used to live way back in College. By the way the foods are so enticing and I am feeling hungry right now, hehe. Best regards.
Thank you! Of course, it's just a store - but it's still nice to remember how I came here and bought something yummy:)
You are most welcome dear and the pleasure is mine. !LUV the amazing displays in the store. Happy Market Friday.
The place is nice, the atmosphere is old, look at the cakes, the bread that is sold is also traditional of course the price are quite affordable. Thank you.
Thank you very much!
Such a nice store and great selection they have @tatdt 👋🏻😊 it would be nice to visit. Thanks for sharing with us.
Have a wonderful weekend ☀️

Now that is a proper shop!! Love it
Thank you!:)
most welcome
I come from a part of the US where they still have stores that reflect their roots like that. I love those old shops and I grew up in them as did my mother and her mother... There is something comforting about the way they used the presentation to showcase your food.
Once upon a time, food was made to be savored, enjoyed, and displayed.
I love your market and I would do the same, and snap some pictures for posterity. I know it is only a grocery store, but, they were places where I got to know the owners personally and they asked after my mother and it all felt more personal. Now? Not so much, just get your food and pay the lady!
This was such a wonderful post and the store is truly a relic from days gone by. I love it. :) Thank you for being part of the challenge!
Don't miss the small things in your life, they usually make no noise but can be indicators of bigger things. I enjoy learning more about you and hope you feel the same, that is why I find it important to take the time to read a couple of #MarketFriday posts and leave a genuine comment. It is important for a community to do this, learning about others, and getting to know each other. The fun is in getting to know people and making a positive contribution to community life. All this fun and money too. What is not to love? That is one of the reasons I joined Hive. How about you? :) I leave you with the guidelines. I hope you are having an amazing week!
