Beautiful Sunday at the art exhibition in the museum yard

This museum has two names at once, one of them is a long official name: ‘Museum of Art of St. Petersburg XX-XXI centuries’. This name quite accurately conveys the essence, but it is too vague and imprecise. Most other small museums and exhibition halls can also be called museums of art of XX-XXI centuries. Such museums usually host exhibitions of contemporary artists (exhibitions of artists of past centuries are organised by the Hermitage, the Russian Museum. and other solid state museums).

As for the geographical specification, it so happens that the life of many Russian artists is somehow connected with St. Petersburg. For example, many contemporary artists were born in other cities, but received special education in one of the higher educational institutions of St. Petersburg. Anyway, many people are used to using another short name instead of the long official one: ‘’Small Manege‘’.

We all know what a manege is - a special building where you can practise riding. ‘’Small Manege‘’ is located in an ordinary house, formerly this building was an archive. Nothing reminds you of horse riding - neither narrow corridors, nor small rooms, nor a small courtyard of complex geometric shape. The origin of the name is rather curious.

There is an exhibition complex in St. Petersburg called Manege - it is a rather spacious building, which actually once housed the manege of the Horse Guards Regiment. This building was reconstructed many years ago as an exhibition centre. And the building ‘Small Manege’ got its name simply because in the first years of its existence these exhibition halls were a branch of the large Manege.

The Small Manege has an advantage over many other exhibition spaces. This building has its own courtyard with a separate entrance through an archway from the Griboyedov Canal embankment. This courtyard is used as an independent exhibition space. If the weather is fine outside and you are going to visit a museum and join the beautiful, you can come to this courtyard and combine a walk with a visit to the exhibition. The entrance is free.

This time I came to the exhibition of the famous sculptor and architect Alexander Yakovlevich Gordin. The most famous work of this author is a huge panel on the Obvodny Channel metro station. In the courtyard there are several sculptures on which the author has been working for the last few years.
