Taking Technology For Granted

Part of the advantage of getting older is that I remember a time before much of what we utilize on a daily basis was around. This means that I saw great change in our we spend out time, engaging in daily activities.

A major issue with the viewpoint of many people, in my view, is that lack the perspective to see how things have changed. Because of this, they draw conclusions that might be a bit misleading.

We should not take technology, nor its impact, for granted. This affects many levels of society, in ways we tend to overlook.

For this reason, lets look at a few things to highlight how things are unfolding.

Overlooking Technological Advancements

A bit over a decade ago, drones started to enter the technological consciousness. Many were writing about the future of drones and what they would bring to society.

This is just one example of what I am speaking about.

How often do you think about drones? Do you ever recognize them?

While few give it much thought, we tend to overlook the fact that it is most likely a drone that shot the aerial video we are viewing on YouTube. If we go back 20 years, that would have been totally baffling.

This might seem like a simply thing but I can assure you, a great deal went into getting things to the point where someone with a few basic skills could get aerial footage, something that was only reserved for specialists in the past.

It simply is another example of sci-fi becoming reality.

The Billion Dollar Smartphone

Do you know how much your smart phone cost? It was billions of dollars.

By this, I am not referring to your personal device. Instead, think about the technologies in it and how much it cost to develop them.

How much money was invested in our global telecommunications network? We can communicate with people all over the world, with under a second latency in many instances and with minimal-to-no cost.

Then we have all the applications? How about camera technology? The ability to upload? Batteries now can last a day without a charge? We can make selections without buttons, simply by pressing on the glass?

Did you ever consider each of the components that are in there and what the first one of them cost?

I can assure you it wasn't a few dollars.

Technology Tentacles

The tentacles of technology are long. We tend to overlook all the ways things are impacted. At the same time, we often miss the disruption taking place.

Do you remember when malls were the rage? If you are under 40, probably not. But they were the place to hang out in the 1980s.

Today, those are in major decline.

Are you old enough to remember a long distance bill? Technology is, by nature, deflationary. Consider all the stuff that is free today which use to have a cost to it.

The exciting aspect to this is when we ponder that which costs money today yet will be free in the future.

We are in the most powerful technological eras in human history. In this regard, there is no better time to be alive. People are able to complain online, not realizing the magnitude of what it took even for them to be able to do that. If they understand it, maybe that would frame things a bit differently.

Hollywood has conditioned us to fear technology. Yet, it is the one constant that leads to advancement of humanity.

Do not take it for granted.

I’ve changed my opinion, or we could say refined, on the technology part. We have fantasies about the Wild West and stuff but it was a really difficult time to live compared to us today. We have it amazing and the important thing is we have to keep it up so we can continue to achieve greater things.

What we have to fight off and not allow is what they are attempting to do: de-industrialize. They’ve done it to an extent in many European countries and we need to reverse that full stop and go back in the direction we were heading before. We are in a pivotal time that’s for sure, and we need to keep going. There will be a lot of decisions on the way but stopping now will make sure that we likely don’t hit this again for hundreds of years I think.

I remember being amazed by things like the compact disc (CD), high speed internet, and the iPhone when they first came out. Now most of that has become part of our daily lives, and we just take it for granted - especially if we were born into it. Such is human nature, I suppose. We always need something new to dazzle us.

I do agree technology has brought things to a level almost everyone can makek use of skills that was very costly back then, advertising changed and became somewhat simpler to do and cost a little bit cheaper than using newspapers.

Being afraid of technology is something I can't really say it's a bad thing, the uncertainty in the job market seems to be increasing the more we hear of technological advances, yes it being free is nice to the people who needs it but what about those who used that to feed they will become less relevant as the time goes. The big question behind the fear is; How do we prepare to be relevant in a world where most skills are free ?. We all know not everyone can be entrepreneurs and even to do that you need to be able to create value which most people don't know how.

I agree. The present is almost always going to be the most technologically advanced humanity is going to be. Barring catastrophic wars that will put us back a lot, it is going to be the case moving forward as well. These improvements are inevitable, and people need to learn to adapt to it, or get left behind.

When youngins were away from home they had the collect call. The world has changed and the rate of that change has increased spectacularly. Some for good. Some for bad. All inevitable.

Very true. There is good with bad when it comes to technology. One thing that is constant is the pace of things. It speeds up. Sending a letter is so slow compared to email or even a text/IM

Technology controls 70% of the world the rest is being controlled by the government though. So I think it should be respected at all cost without it we cant really do half of the things in real life.
